On Saturday (March 13), the Vikings took on Marist at home. The Spartans were able to take the win 4-0, however Siuslaw coach Londi Tomaro had many positive notes about the match. “I was happy with Saturday’s game for the most part,” said To- maro. “We knew Marist would be a very strong opponent and that we would have to work hard to even get chances in front of the net.” Tomaro was also grateful for the opportunity to play a stron- NED HICKSON /SIUSLAW NEWS Siusaw junior goalkeeper Kayden Lane (96) thwarts a scor- ing attempt by Marist. I was in-tro- duced to the game about fi ve years ago by my son Brandon. We were having a barbeque in his backyard and out came two wooden platforms and eight bean bags. Th e game is similar to horseshoes — but safer. Th e object is to throw the bean bags into a hole of an an- gled landing board, with play- ers alternating throws. A bean bag going into the hole scores three points. Your opponent has an opportunity to cancel your points by also throwing a bag through the hole. Bags landing on the board count one point but can also be cancelled by opponents land- ing on the board. Th e games can be played to any score you agree to before players begin; typically, the games goes to 21 points. How popular is the game of cornhole? While channel surfi ng the ESPN sports chan- nels, I came across the World Championship Cornhole Tournament sponsored by the American Cornhole League. I watched as the women and then the men battled for the championships in their re- spectful categories. Th ere are no diff erences in rules or distances or bean bag dimensions for male or female competitors. Th ey did not tele- vise the mixed pairs champi- onship. Th e game resembles horse- shoes in many components. Both teams were relentless, and the match went to five sets, but the Lady Lions came away victorious this time around. In the first set, the Lions eked out the win 25-19. This was the second consecutive away game for the Lady Vikings, which coach Ashlee Cole said factored into the team’s momentum and rhythm as a unit. NED HICKSON /SIUSLAW NEWS See VIKS 3B
