SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, MARCH 20, 2021 | 3B Soccer from 1B one-touch off of a corner kick that the Marist keeper saved. In the second half, Siu- slaw got the ball down in the attacking third a few times but was not able to get off any shots. Marist scored one goal in the half, with Lane making three saves in the second half. “We were exerting enough pressure through- out the game that the Marist defense was clear- ing the ball out instead of moving it back up the field. Marist played a strong pass- ing game and moved the ball around very well,” said Tomaro, who explained that during portions of the game, the team was able to maintain pressure and mark the open passing tar- gets to disrupt the flow of Marist’s momentum. “However, during other portions of the game, we were marking the ball in- stead of the players,” said Tomaro. “That leads to un- necessary running and our players tiring more quick- ly.” Despite the loss, Toma- ro was proud of her team’s efforts, explaining, “Our team played the game that I hoped they would play. They passed and worked together and played effec- tive defense.” Then, on Tuesday (March 16), the Vikings went on the road to play Cottage Grove. The Lions, who are one of the more A weekly roundup of shopping, savings and doings around town. BARGAINS OF THE MONTH seasoned teams in the Sky- Em League, roared their way to eight goals, with the Vikings scoring zero. The Vikings struggled partially because they had players out for the match, so they were forced to com- pete with no subs — which was not an issue for Cot- tage Grove. Maintaining sufficient subs for her team has been an issue in previ- ous games. So, after Tues- day’s match, Tomaro made the decision to merge her JV and varsity teams into one varsity team. “Unfortunately, it is ex- tremely difficult to main- tain a high intensity game with that imbalance,” ex- plained Tomaro. Us a re- sult of merging the teams, the final JV game has been canceled, with the JV play- ers now merged into the varsity squad for the re- mainder of the season. In the first half against The Lions, Lane made 7 saves, with the Lions scor- ing 4 goals while taking a total of 18 shots against The Viks. In the second half, Lane made 4 saves, with the Lions scoring 4 more goals on 14 attempts. Cot- tage Grove’s final goal was scored on a penalty kick for a handball in the box. According to Tomaro, Siuslaw got some chances in front of the net and came close to scoring, with Jason Garcia and Dylan Jensen as notable players on offense. Again, Tomaro expected that the match to be chal- lenging, noting the amount of experience at the varsity level being a key factor to her team’s performance. Fortunately, this first season as a varsity team is allowing the Vikings the time needed to gain experi- ence at this level. Overall, Tomaro said she is proud of the efforts her team has shown despite the fact that this first season as a varsity team has been dif- ficult. “They played hard throughout their game,” Tomaro said. “We didn't give up on offense — we continued to press the ball into the Cottage Grove end and we attempted to get shots right up to the end. The defense played with great focus and intensity during every scoring at- tempt. “There are definitely things we can work on but, overall, I'm proud of our team for maintaining their effort and enthusiasm.” Thursday night (March 18), the Vikings got a re- match at Marist, with the Spartans taking an 8-0 win. Siuslaw plays again this Tuesday, when the Viks host Marshfield beginning at 6:30 p.m. Viks set. “That helped us there, especially with that close of a game,” Cole said of the duo’s serving. In set three, Siuslaw came out strong after the win, but was not able to maintain the focus needed to secure the win. “We got too excited about the sec- ond set and just kind of let [Cottage Grove] back into it,” said Cole. “We actually had a really big lead in the third set, and we just kind of let them come right back and take it away from us. And [the girls] didn't like that.” Refusing to give up at that point, in set four, the Vikings were persistent and unyielding, making sure that the Lions had no chance to steal the set. “In set four, we came out strong from the start,” said Cole. “We didn't let them have any kind of momen- tum at all, we just kept it the whole entire set.” Again, Siuslaw managed to even the match by win- ning the fourth set, 25-19. In the fifth set, the Vi- kings played hard, but two missed serves proved cost- ly — providing the Lions with the points needed to secure the match win, 15- 12. “The whole match it- self, we only missed four serves. Having those last two being in that last set hurt us a little bit. But we went back and forth each set, and we never gave up,” said Cole. “We had a few small hiccups that kind of threw off our momentum in that last set with some substitution issues. We lost our focus for a little bit but never stopped after that. “We got our mindset back and we got a few more points on the board, and we tried our best all the way through.” The girls played a no- table game offensively. Kya Blake had 16 kills and 1 block, Tupua had 11 kills and 6 blocks, and Alizabeth Norton had 3 kills to go with 3 blocks. Zoe Alberty had 33 as- sists overall. Cole was very pleased with her team’s efforts throughout. “This was definitely the best game we've played all season. It was really fun to watch the girls actually play- ing up to their full po- tential,” she said of her team’s performance. Cole said the team is looking forward to the Vikings’ next meeting with the Lions in a cou- ple of weeks. “It’s definitely going to be probably as close,” said Cole, “and it'll prob- ably go to five sets, and it'll be a fun game again. Hopefully we can just come out ahead next time.” Thursday (March 18), the Vikings were back on the road again, this time at Marist to take on the Lady Spartans. The last time the Viks played Marist was the season opener at home, with the Spartans taking a 3-1 win. On Thursday, Siu- slaw returned the favor, sweeping the Spartans on their home court, 25- 20, 25-23, 25-14. Tupua nabbed 13 kills and 3 blocks, Blake had 3 kills, Hailee Outlaw had 4 kills, and Alizabeth Norton scored 2 kills against Marist. Siuslaw’s next game will be at home on Tues- day (March 23), when the Lady Viks host Marshfield, beginning at 6:45 p.m. Limited seating is available for spectators. from 1B TRUE VALUE HARDWARE 1750 HIGHWAY 126 DUNES VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTER FLORENCE, OR PHONE (541) 997-8024 SALE DATE: MARCH 1 - MARCH 31, 2021 SAVE $ 20 $69.99 True Temper® 6 cu. ft. They did a lot better this time than they did against [Junction City], and I was excited about that,” Cole said of Tuesday’s match. Once things got going for Siuslaw, they were able to play their best game and maintain focus. Cole com- mended her team for “not- giving-up mentality, not letting that first game get to them, and just coming right back.” In addition to added grit and focus, the Vikings’ serving was truly on point in the second set.
