Florence ‘Earth Day’ celebration event April 15-22 Middle schoolers create
This year’s Earth Day
is April 22 and, despite
Covid-19
restrictions,
the Earth Day commit-
tee is planning a peo-
ple-friendly, safe event
for the Florence area
community.
The Florence Earth
Day Porch Parade will
commence April 15 and
continue through the
next week.
Individual homes and
businesses — or pairings
of both — can decorate
their porch or yard to
celebrate Earth Day.
The theme this year is
“Restore Our Earth.”
Community members
can use their imagina-
tion in decorating, with
themes of recycling, cli-
mate, tree planting, green
energy, beach clean-up
and more encouraged.
In addition, certificate
awards will be present-
ed for a variety of cate-
gories including “Best
Child-Created Display,”
“Most Imaginative” and
“Best Representation of
Theme.”
Yard signs will be avail-
able beginning April 12.

ries of free emergency
preparedness
presen-
tations throughout the
month.
How to prepare for
emergencies:
Taking place every
Tuesday in March from
6 to 7 p.m., classes will
cover the most common
disasters we face in the
Pacific Northwest and
how to prepare for them.
Whether you’re mo-
tivated to start building
your preparedness kit, or
need a refresher course,
these classes are designed
to help families and indi-
viduals learn how to be
better prepared.

Red Cross recognizes
that preparing for emer-
gencies looks a little dif-
ferent right now, but the
three basic action steps
remain the same: Build a
Kit, Make a Plan and Be
Informed.
In addition to the pre-
paredness series, the Red
Cross Cascades Region
has a free downloadable
“Prepare! Guide” avail-
able in English, Spanish,
Vietnamese and Russian.
For nearly 80 years,
U.S. presidents have pro-
claimed March as Red
Cross Month to recog-
nize people giving back
through its lifesaving
mission — which is pow-
ered more than 90 per-
cent by volunteers.
They include people
who volunteer to provide
emotional support, psy-
chological first aid and
referrals to community
assistance for families
coping with disasters
during the pandemic.

that families don’t face
emergencies alone — es-
pecially during a pan-

art to help OCHS
The Florence Region-
al Arts Alliance (FRAA)
has announced it is
supporting the Siuslaw
Middle School Social
Justice Club with its cur-
rent fundraiser.
According to art
teacher Lauren Suveg-
es, who heads the club,
“Students talked about
several relevant issues
that they care about, in-
cluding civil rights, en-
vironmental rights and
animal rights.”
The club will be host-
ing a fundraiser to focus
on The Oregon Coast
Humane Society today,
March 13, from 9 a.m. to
noon. There will be an
animal supplies drop-off
in the front of the mid-
dle School.
In addition, students
have created an Ani-
mal Art Show and Sale
which will be exhibit-
ed at FRAA, 120 Maple
St., from today through
April 11.
All artworks were cre-
ated by Siuslaw Middle
School artists, with pro-
ceeds being given to the
Oregon Coast Humane
Society.
“The participants are
an amazing bunch of 7th
and 8th graders,” said
Suveges.
