SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, MARCH 13, 2021 | 3B Fishing from 1B fish, but there are still some fish being caught. The Siuslaw typically peaks in February and starts to slow down in March. The Whitaker Creek area is the best place to target returning hatch- ery fish. Hatchery fish are also planted in Lake Creek and are released into Green Creek. These returning hatchery fish will start to show up in December and peak in January and February. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing continues to be slow on the Alsea. The river is now low and clear making it tough for the bank anglers on the NF Alsea but con- ditions are good for the drift boaters in the main- stem. Although it has been a slow year there are still fish to be caught in the system through the month of March. The later returning wild broodstock fish are providing the majority of the catch now and typically peak in March. Reminder: The popular winter steelhead bank fish- ery around the Alsea Hatchery remains open but the hatchery grounds are closed to the public. Anglers are required to park in the designated A weekly roundup of shopping, savings and doings around town. parking lot to access the river and are not allowed to park near or enter the hatchery grounds. Be respectful of the hatchery staff and follow these rules to ensure this popular fishery remains open for the 2021 season. SALMON RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead are around in the Salmon River. The peak for winter steelhead on the Salmon River is typically Janu-ary to March. Note: The Salmon River hatchery remains closed to walk in anglers. Anglers can use access points upstream and down- stream of the hatchery to access those traditional fishing locations. SILETZ RIVER: Winter steelhead Steelhead fishing on the Siletz River has slowed down again as the river drops and clears. The drift boat anglers are catching some fish down low in the system but it continues to be a slow year on the Siletz and all coastal rivers. Fresh fish will continue to enter the system through March despite the low and clear conditions. Fish are now distributed throughout the river from the boat sections up through the gorge. Mid-February to mid- March is typically the peak for Siletz steelheading. The 4-mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehicles on the weekends only. Anglers can walk/ bike in the road during the weekdays. There is a park- ing area located at the 1-mile gate where anglers can walk/bike upstream. Little ball is snapped, the defense must defend the entire fi eld. When Jeff McClellen (1976-79 Viking QB) took the ball, he had three op- tions on where to attack the defense; chapter 3 in the Tzu Attack by Stratagem. Lutero also employed special formations inside the opponents’ 10-yard line. “Eight Special” was his vari- ation in tactics. He would overload one side of the ball to get the defense to shift — and then run away from the shift ; chapter 8 in Tzu’s Varia-tion in Tactics. Plans for each game were provided by scouting up- coming opponents. From these reports, plans were made on how to attack an opponent’s weak point; chapter 13 in Tzu’s book: Use of Spies (or scouts, of which I was one.) Chapter 1 is “Laying the Plans” and chapter 6 is “Weak Points and Strong Points.” When the Oregon Ducks played Auburn to start the season in 2018, Coach Cris- to-bal was too concerned about establishing off ensive dominance over the Au- burn de-fense. As a result, he continued to attack his opponent’s strongest point of de-fense. His failure to make a fi rst down on the Duck’s fourth attempt cost Oregon the game. When your off ense is on the move, there is an old saying: “Run the play until they stop it.” In 1976, my Spray Eagles’ football team was facing a tough Crane High School football team. On our fi rst possession, we ran the ball play aft er play all the way down to the 5-yard line. It was at this point I called a play action pass to hope-fully catch the defense off guard. All I got was an intercep- tion in the end zone ending our drive. I went against the rule; chapter 9 in Tzu’s book: An Army on the March More schools are install- ing artifi cial turf. In 1976, the Spray Eagles played in a cow pasture — an all- dirt fi eld (our home fi eld) — on an artifi cial turf and a regulation grass football fi eld with goal posts (Th e cow pasture and our fi eld had no goal posts.) Th is made calling a post-corner pass pattern diffi cult to un- derstand for our receivers (Chapter 10: Terrain) Late in any season, the opponents have had many opportunities to scout (spy) your team. Th ey know much about your tactics (plays). Lutero always kept certain plays in his so called “back pocket.” Th ese were plays practiced everyday but not utilized in a game. When called late in the sea- son, these plays were oft en very eff ective (Chapter 8: Variation in Tactics.) Making sure your team remains healthy and well rested as the season con- tinues is of utmost impor- tance. Th e most relevant games are the play-off s. Th e team can be ready by using regular substitutions and time outs called during the contests (Chapter 5: Ener- gy.) Once the game begins, the general (head coach) deploys his multiple teams (of-fense, defense and spe- cial teams) to battle the op- ponent. If he has prepared his team well, the outcome may be favorable (Chapter 2: Waging War.) Most sports would ben- efi t from using strategies contained in Sun Tzu’s book. from 1B football coach and SHS Hall-of-Famer Len Lutero employed the veer off ense to attack the opponent. Th e veer off ense relates to an at- tack by stratagem. When the FLORENCE FOOD SHARE Make your life easier with HONDA. Florence Saw Shop is your local HONDA Power equipment dealer.
