8A | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27, 2021 | SIUSLAW NEWS Sign up now for SWC’s Native Plant Distribution The Siuslaw Watershed Council (SWC) gives away thousands of free native plants annually to communi- ty members throughout the Siuslaw and Coastal Lakes Watersheds. If you have a creek flowing through your back yard, or live along one of our scenic lakes, you may be eligible to receive free native plants next Febru- ary from SWC. Native plants help clean the air, clean the water and create habitat for wildlife. We based the choices on feedback from our community: polli- nators, coastal forbs and uncommon plants that were once more abundant. SWC staff can help with your plant list and our field technicians can help OCHS from page 1A OCHS was forced to completely reconstitute its procedures for select- ing board members after a 2017 Oregon Department of Justice inquiry into management practices within the nonprofit. The ODJ made a num- ber of recommendations to address failings within the selection process and other ways to better man- age the shelter, which had recently received signif- icant financial contribu- tions. One of the most im- portant suggestions was the hiring of a permanent executive director and a full-time shelter manager. Both positions were filled, with Marina Lewis taking prepare your site, plant seedlings, and maintain the site. Visit online at www.siuslaw.org and click the “En- gage” tab to find the “NPD Brochure” and “Place Orders” links. The free native plants will be avail- able for pick up on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021 at multiple locations through- out the area. COVID safety measures will be in place this year, which may include picking up by appointment. We will follow current guidelines and com- municate safety measures in advance. Mark Curran was then hired as executive di- rector in January 2019, but resigned less than a year later in December. The position of shelter manager was left vacant and a second nation-wide search for an executive director was initiated, re- sulting in the hiring of Brown last May. Curran and some OCHS board members were vo- cal in their criticism of the actions of the board at the time. Curran commented on the latest resignation by Brown in an email to the Siuslaw News. “I haven’t met Charles but, in my opinion, his résumé is pretty strong and he’s done some good things in his few months with OCHS. I’m sure Shauna [Robbers] will put this down as ‘business as usual,’ but for an organiza- tion to have two qualified executive directors resign in the space of 12 months should raise alarm bells. As a Lifetime Member of OCHS, the board’s actions are deeply worrying to me,” Curran said. Siuslaw News received an email from Brown’s teenaged daughter, Madi, who shared her disap- pointment with the sit- uation at OCHS and the damage she claims was done to her father. “I got to help him hand out pet food to homeless people, make cat boxes for feral cats, and even got to see him put himself in danger to rescue a kitten,” she wrote. “But I also got to see him get maligned, lied to and lied about. I got to see pieces of my dad torn out, I got to hear my dad telling me that ‘the truth wins out, and if you work with passion for good you can never go wrong.’ We will be packing up soon and leaving Florence, but I will never forget the lesson I learned here — unfortu- nately not the lesson my Dad was trying teach me.” Siuslaw News has at- tempted to contact Charles Visit us on the web T HE S IUSLAW N EWS . COM Brown for a statement regarding his resignation but, as of press time Tues- day, has not received a re- sponse. Robbers has also not re- sponded to a request for additional information regarding Brown’s resig- nation, or the concerns raised by Curran and Brown’s daughter.
