When my wife, Gin- ney, consulted with her primary care doctor, she was told it wasn’t necessary for her to be tested unless she devel- oped symptoms. Personally, I think some of the local med- ical community aren’t fully on board with this virus. In Ginney’s case, I wondered if she got COVID-19 but was as- ymptomatic — how would we know? It was a very weird week staying at home, not making any outside trips. Every morning and sometimes after- noons as well, I would check in with my play- ing buddies: “No symp- toms here. How about you guys? Had your tests yet? Get your re- sults back?” I have to say we are all over 70 years of age, one over 80. In short order, I learned the other two players and their wives had been tested. Every- one received negative results. One had an an- tigen test, the oldest of the group had both an antigen and PCR test. Since our ages put us all in a high-risk cate- gory and I am also com- promised, being a pros- tate cancer warrior, it meant every day of that week was a mix of emo- tions: fear, trepidation, and lots of temperature taking… I don’t feel very well… Am I com- ing down with it? Or is it just in my head? Every day we would wait for Jim’s daily posts. Is he getting bet- ter? Worse? What can we do for a guy that has no appetite, no strength, is home alone, for how long? More to come… problem. I search for my out- fit. Instantly, I spot a warm, beige sweater that I hadn’t worn since last winter.It feels heavy as I pull it down from the shelf. The function of this prac- tice is not entirely clear, but it may aid digestion and prevent sharp prey items from entering the intestines. As much as half the stomach contents can be feathers, and grebes must periodically cough up feather pellets to make room. So, if you’re keen to find winter wildlife, bundle up for a social- ly-distanced walk by the river.
