The project started out to ad- dress food insecurity is- sues of student families, but has grown to include other persons in need in the community.” Florence Food Share has been providing the fund- ing for the food products while the Siuslaw School District Food Services staff has been assembling the meals for distribution. A team of school volun- teers has been going out to make the deliveries each week. The meal delivery pro- vides another chance for staff and students to con- nect, even for a little bit, during distance learning. While out on the deliv- ery routes, the school staff also delivers school materials and technology devices to allow students to connect and engage in distance learning. Staff are making the food delivery runs as effi- cient as possible. Florence Food Share Executive Director Colin Morgan said, “I am in awe at the amazing work our school did and continues to do for our communi- ties’ kids. COVID-19 has been a challenge for ev- eryone, and our school has truly gone above and beyond. The hard work the school district staff puts in makes me so very proud to live in this amaz- ing community.” Florence Food Share was able to support this project with funding from the Marie Lamfrom Char- itable Foundation, Safe Shelter for Siuslaw Stu- dents, Siuslaw Education Foundation, And addi- tional funding from anon- ymous donors. Morgan added, “The care and compassion this community has for its kids is one of the many things that make the Siu- slaw region special. The donors that helped make this project a reality were so very passionate about helping our kids. People are encouraged to share this information with co-workers, friends, family, congregation and neighbors. The applica- tion deadline is February 11, 2021. In Oregon, one in sev- en families spend 50 percent or more of their partner family to make sure that they do not spend more than 30 per- cent of their income on their Habitat home. “Often when I speak with people in our com- munity, they tell me that they will not qualify because they make too much money, but after further discussion we determine that they are below the 80 percent me- dian income we serve,” said Florence Habitat Executive Director Janell Morgan. Three informational meetings will be held to selection, timelines for building the new home and all the way through the first year of home- ownership. Attendance is not required, but is rec- ommended. “It is important for ap- plicants to understand this is not a quick hous- ing fix. Support and Encourage Youth Artists Visitors Center displays artistic photos The world-class work of local photographer Rod- ger Bennett’s winter ex- hibit at the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce’s Visitors Center has been refreshed for locals and visitors to enjoy. Bennett’s eye-popping work is arranged by in- terest — Florence (bridge, dunes, harbor, surf), Ore- gon, international, people, animals, and still life. The Chamber’s Visitor Center is at 290 High- way 101 in Florence. The Chamber features a dif- ferent local artists’ work on a rotating basis and is open this winter from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. “There are some local favorites and some new items that we are fond of. We hope that people vis- iting the Chamber will enjoy the showing,” Ben- nett added. “There are a variety of sizes and a few decorator images. There’s a zebra suite that I real- ly like and a few foliage shots that are really pleas- ant. We’ll continue to ro- tate some images in and out over the next month or two to keep the display fresh and interesting.” According to Chamber President/CEO Bettina Hannigan, “We are de- lighted to again have Rod- ger’s stunning local and international work for our seasonal display at the Chamber’s Visitors Cen- ter. Traditionally he has been our winter exhibitor and his work has brought so much joy to many of our visitors.” All pieces are for sale and customized sizes and media are available to or- der.
