Watershed Council holds annual meeting Humane Society hosts pet microchipping clinic The community is in- vited to the Siuslaw Wa- tershed Council’s Virtual Watershed Community Meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 27, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. During the meeting, people will hear a presen- tation on the innovative and award-winning Five- mile-Bell Restoration Proj- ect, given by Paul Burns (USFS) and Kyle Terry (SWC), who have many stories and observations to share from a decade of work on this recently com- pleted project. People will also be able to connect with their neigh- bors; hear about the SWC’s diversity, equity and inclu- sion work; participate in the SWC’s Board of Direc- tors elections; and partic- ipate in the confirmation of the SWC’s Leadership Body Members. The council will be ac- cepting nominations for Leadership Body and Board of Directors posi- tions up to and during the meeting, and all members of the council are eligible to vote. Deadline for en- tries is Jan. 31. In addition, the Native Plant Distribution pro- gram is still taking re- quests for native plants to be planted along streams in the Siuslaw Watershed. Distribution day is Feb. 6. The Oregon Coast Hu- mane Society (OCHS) wants every lost or stolen pet to find its way home. That’s why it will host a drive-through microchip clinic on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. “A microchip is your pet’s permanent ID. It contains the pet’s name, description, contact information for its guardian, and can include vaccination information and other health records,” explained OCHS Executive Director Charles Brown. “The microchip is the size of a grain of rice and is in- jected beneath your pet’s skin. It can be scanned at any animal shelter or vet- erinarian’s office in the US and is a proven success in reuniting lost or stolen pets with their humans.” The clinic will be held at the OCHS parking lot, 2840 Rhododendron Dr., in Florence. All pets must be leashed and/or contained and able to be restrained during implantation. “We will be asking for a $20 contribution, but no one will be turned away,” said Brown. The director gave fur- ther information on micro- chips. “If your pet already has a microchip, it’s good to have it scanned and to up- date the data, especially if you’ve moved or changed your phone number,” Brown added. “If you’ve re- cently adopted a dog or cat you should have the chip checked and updated with your information.” OCHS will register all chips with a national data- base.
