One-in-7 families spend 50 percent or more of their in- come on housing. Florence Food Share and Florence Habitat for Hu- manity are teaming up to help fight childhood hunger and housing instability. The Souper Bowl of Car- ing started in 1990 when a South Carolina Sunday school teacher used Super Bowl parties as a mod- ern-day example of gluttony when fans eat wings, pizza and chips they don’t need — while at the same time someone in the same town goes hungry. The class asked every- one leaving church on Su- per Bowl Sunday to donate $1 from their Super Bowl party budget to fight hun- ger. What started as a small movement has grown to a national effort to give back on a day of plenty. Several years ago, Flor- ence resident Lori Janowski suggested to St. Mary Our Lady of the Dunes parish to join in this effort. Each year, St. Mary’s has asked its congregation to donate non-perishable food to Food Share and monetary donations to Florence Hab- itat for Humanity at the Saturday 5:30 evening and Sunday 11 a.m. Masses on Superbowl weekend. Several other groups from the local faith com- munity have joined with St. Mary’s to participate in Souper Bowl of Caring. This year, the entire com- munity is being encouraged to join together Super Bowl weekend to help fight child- hood hunger and housing instability. Yachats Lions Club to host anual crab feed fundraiser For more than 20 years, the Yachats Lions Club has held an “all the Crab you can eat” event in Yachats, Ore. This years’ crab feed will be a little different due to covid-19, we will be sell- ing crab meals available for take-out only. It will consist of one whole local crab, cole slaw, and homemade bread. Meals will be available for pick-up (scheduled times) at the Lions Hall, 344 Fourth St. in Yachats. The $25 per person tick- ets are available for sale online at www.yachatslion- sclub.org. All proceeds from the annual crab feed fundraiser supports Lions Commu- nity service projects with scholarships to graduating seniors, food pantries, the preschool and after school programs of the Yachats Youth and Family program, South Lincoln Resources programs, eyeglasses for children and adults. With the motto “We Serve,” Yachats Lions Club is celebrating 71 years of service to Yachats and South Lincoln County. The Yachats Lions Thrift Store has served our community for more than 40 years. Nowadays, it is much easier to locate a school’s athletic facilities with GPS than when we were going from place to place to sup- port our children. Once you are at the facility re- member to have money to enter. Have money to eat, money for fundraising ticket drawings, money for gas and money for your night before any compe- tition (from fi rst grade through high school), and 2) Not allowing them to participate in any pastime that may cause injury that may keep them from play- ing for their team. Th is included skate- boarding and snow skiing. It is not easy being a parent for an athlete, but the bene- fi ts of athletic competitions help young people prepare for diffi cult decisions in their later lives.
