More than half of the relief provided this year by SOS was COVID-19 related assistance. “Another area where we are really struggling is not having volunteers,” Teter said. “Most of our volunteers are in the highly vulnerable cate- gory. To protect them we have asked most of them to stay home.” As a result, the orga- nization’s workforce has been reduced by a third despite the increased workload for a pro- fessional staff already stretched thin. “Two of our staff have not have a complete day off since September,” said Teter, who is cur- rently working on grants and fundraising to ad- dress upgrades to the SOS safe house — which needs a new roof, floor- ing repairs, providing handicap access to the backyard, and painting the interior and exterior of building. The nonprofit also needs to replace three computers and monitors that are nearly 10 years old. “Not everything is gloomy this holiday season,” said Teter, who said that contributions of support have been generous this year. “We know many are strug- gling and yet they still continue to support us.” The community has responded and helped SOS nearly reach its fundraising goal for De- cember. “We are all so grateful to each person who has supported SOS in these shocking times. But the need isn’t going to mag- ically drop off after the holidays — In fact, it of- ten increases. If I could ask the community a favor it would be to re- member SOS in January and February when the need is still so great but contributions typically drop off,” he said. SOS started as the Siuslaw Area Wom- en’s Center in 1986 by a group of local wom- en with a mission to Me? Volunteer? assist victims of sexual assault or domestic vio- lence. The nonprofit has evolved over the years, adding services for fam- ilies, men, women and children throughout Western Lane County. “We look to the root of a person’s need and help them resolve their situation at the source without indiscriminate- ly handing out cash, checks or vouchers,” said Teter. Today, SOS provides direct services to more than 3,000 individuals annually. Businesses of all sizes have been hit hard in this challenging new age of social distancing and self-isolation, but the blow has been catastrophic for small operations that rely on in-person transactions. There are many ways to help this holiday season, like purchasing gift certificates or memberships, and yet there are many service-type businesses that don’t have that option. As we look to a new year, we’re celebrating what connects us as a community, and what we can do to support our local businesses! THAT’S WHY WE CREATED THE SUPPORT LOCAL TOGETHER CAMPAIGN. The Support Local Together campaign will help local businesses who have to choose between promoting their business and paying the electric bill. It will also help support the Siuslaw News, who has seen a strong decrease in advertising revenue, but an increase in readership. IT DOES TWO THINGS. 1. Funds advertising dollars for local businesses Your financial support will go directly to fund advertising that our local businesses need to stay top of mind. 2. Supports local journalism By becoming a supporting member, you are helping to replace some of the advertising revenue the Siuslaw News has lost over the past ten months, due to the pandemic. HERE IS HOW TO SUPPORT: • Call 541-902-3524 • Make a donation of your choosing. • Choose a specific local business that you would like the advertising credit to go to, or leave that blank and we will designate it to a business we know needs help. We believe the vast majority of our readers have always shared our view of the value and necessity of a strong local media and are willing to provide support Yes, I would like to become a 2020/21 Support Local Together Sponsor equal to two or three cups of Call 541-902-3524 coffee a month to secure its Mail sponsorship form to: Siuslaw News Supporter future.
