He retired after a diagnosis of degenerative disc disease. This fall, Hine received word that he would need a C3-4 anterior cer- vical discectomy, osteophytectomy and arthrodesis (fusion) and plat- ing as soon as possible. He decided to share the story of his medical situation to help inform friends and neighbors what he ex- perienced and to let them know the appreciation he feels for the sup- port he has received so far. “It’s been a very crazy nine days,” he wrote on Dec. 11. “I went in a week ago Monday (Nov. 30) for a C3-4 spinal fusion that was supposed to be an outpatient deal — stay one night for obser- vation, go home next morning. (WE EVEN GAME BOARD g Former Florence Police Officer Gerry Hine is the intended recipi- ent of a new GoFundMe page set up and managed by Hine’s colleague and friend, Ken Newlin. Hine had recently undergone spinal fusion surgery but developed life-threat- ening complications immediately after his procedure. Fortunately, those complications are no longer life threatening — but now his long recovery has begun. Newlin, who has remained friends with Hine since his retire- ment from the Florence Police Department in 2015, is now ask- ing the members of the commu- nity to help with the unexpected bills generated by the emergency surgery Hine recently underwent. “Gerry was an officer with the City of Florence for over two de- cades. He has had multiple com- plications since his surgery a few days ago and is back in for his third surgery,” Newlin told Siuslaw News. “I have known Gerry since 2001 when I was also a reserve officer in Florence. He is a great guy who has been through a lot since he left the department. Interest surrounding this particu- lar PC meeting was heightened as a decision on a contested annexation was one of two major action items on the meeting’s agenda. Chairperson John Murphey called the meeting to order with all com- missioners in attendance. The agenda listed Resolution PC 20 22 and PC 2023 as the first two action items, which were the appli- cations from Michael Farthing, on behalf of Benedick Holdings, LCC, to annex 48.82 acres along Oceana Drive, located east of Rhododen- dron Drive, within the Heceta South subdivision, and east and south of Sandrift Street, and also east of the eastern terminus of Cloudcroft Lane within the Idylewood subdivision. Resolution PC 20 23 assigned a zoning classification to the annexed property. One of the most significant ele- ments in the materials presented to commissioners is the staff report “Findings of Fact,” which includes information providing more back- ground — in this case, on city re- quirements as detailed in City Code. Siuslaw Middle School also had students attend — “a proud moment for the middle school,” said Princi- pal Andy Marohl. “We had just over 20 students in today, and we’ll be bringing in an- other 20 plus, in tomorrow,” he told the school board. “It was a lot of work to bring those kids in, but ev- erything I’m hearing from the teach- ers, it sounds like it’s well worth it so far. The meeting was held via Zoom and streamed on the district’s YouTube page. In the administrator reports, Siu- slaw Elementary Principal Mike Harklerode talked about how the district is expanding comprehen- sive distance learning to include limited in-person instruction (LIPI). While still in the early stag- es at Siuslaw School District, LIPI is a chance for students to enter school district facilities for the first time since the COVID-19 pandem- ic mandated that schools switch to online learning. “This week, the elementary school has 19 total cohorts on campus both through today and some more to- morrow, a total of 20 students com- ing in, which frankly seems like a mountain compared to the lockout we’ve had up until last week — and it feels great. The teachers who’ve had kids in have had happy kids,” he said.
