2A | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARIES BURKEY—Joy Patri- cia (Smith) Burkey, 82, of Florence, Ore., passed away peacefully in her sleep Nov. 30, 2020, in Florence. She was born on April 18, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of the late Theophilus Louis Smith and Gladys Ger- trude Stevens of Pomeroy, Ohio. Joy grew up in Pome- roy, on the Ohio River, where she graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1956 as the highest achieving female student. It was her grandfather’s dream that she would study the pipe organ and, at age 14, she began pipe organ studies at the Unit- ed Methodist Church in Pomeroy. She played for churches and choral groups in Ohio and Kentucky from age 16. While at Ohio State University, she accompa- nied the College of Den- tistry chorus; she graduat- ed with a degree in Dental Hygiene in 1958. Joy moved to California Chorus before moving to Florence in 2003. In Florence, joy was the organist and choir accom- panist at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw un- til her retirement in De- cember 2014. She served as Treasur- er and Dean of the Chico Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Joy also worked as a dental hygienist for 20 years and an elementary school office manager in the Chico Unified School District for 12 years. to continue organ studies and, by 1964, was the or- ganist of the First Chris- tian Church of Chico where she remained for 20 years. She gave numerous or- gan recitals throughout northern California. Joy later served as an or- ganist, pianist and piano accompanist at the Ches- ter Community United Methodist Church, the Chester Community Chorus, the Paradise First Christian Church, and the Paradise Community In addition to her mu- sical talents, Joy was an accomplished deer hunt- er, basket maker (Appa- lachian and pine needle) and oil painter. She en- joyed sewing, golf, fish- ing, hiking, gardening, creative cooking, travel- ling and reading. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter DY. Joy had previous mar- ried names of Foster and Stamm. In addition to her parents, she was pre- deceased in death by her sister, Sue Ellen Smith Zirkle, and her husband Gerald Duane Burkey, Sr. There will be no me- morial service; she will be remembered during the worship service at the Presbyterian Church of Siuslaw in Florence on Sunday, Dec. 6. Remembrances in her name can be directed to the Music Fund of the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw. Sheriff’s office asks for public’s help in Waldport homicide investigation On Sunday, Dec. 6, at approximately 3:37 a.m., Lincoln County Sheriff ’s Office Dispatch received a 911 call reporting a bur- glary in progress on South Crestline Drive, in Wald- port, Ore. The reporting party told Dispatch her husband was fighting with a suspect in- side the residence at the time of call. Lincoln County Sher- iff ’s deputies responded to the scene and located Mark Campbell, 66, of Waldport. Campbell was pro- nounced deceased at the scene from injuries he sustained during the fight. No suspect(s) have been arrested in connection with this incident and the investigation is ongoing. The Lincoln County Sheriff ’s Office is being assisted by the Oregon State Police Criminal In- vestigation Unit (CID), Oregon State Police Fo- rensics, Newport Police, Lincoln City Police and the Lincoln County Dis- trict Attorney’s Office.
