2A | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARIES WHITMORE—Barba- ra Joan Whitmore, 85, of Florence, Ore., passed Nov. 25, 2020, in Albany, Ore. Barbara was born May 9, 1935 to Joseph Dolor Galarneau and Maria Mad- er Galar- neau in Portland, Ore. Barbara attended Lebanon Un i o n H i g h Barbara School Whitmore and grad- uated in 1954. She attended Provi- dence Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, Ore., and graduated in 1957 aa a Registered Nurse. She married her High School Sweetheart, Rich- ard (Dick) Nye Whitmore Dec. 28, 1958. On July 9, 1958, they welcomed their first daughter Kaye Lynn and, on April 23, 1962, they welcomed their sec- ond daughter, Jacqueline (Jacquie) Rae. Barbara worked at West- ern Lane Hospital and Peace Health Hospital in Florence, Ore., retiring in 1995. Barbara enjoyed her pro- fession as a nurse and had a passion for helping the ill and delivering babies. She loved working with all her co-workers; they were a second family to her. Barbara was a kind and compassionate person and most of all she loved be- ing a mother, grandmother and a beloved wife. Barbara had many tal- ents and enjoyed sewing, cross stitch and beading. Barbara was an avid Ore- gon State fan; she enjoyed attending college football games and collecting Bea- ver memorabilia. She loved camping with family and friends, fishing, reading, visiting with her classmates and caring for her dogs and plants. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Nye Whitmore, in 2012. She is survived by her daughters: Kaye Lynn Whitmore-Hunt of Gil- lette, WY, and Jacqueline (Jacquie) Rae Hodges of Albany, Ore.; sons- in-law Joe Hodges of Albany, Ore., and Randy D. Hunt of Gil- lette, WY; her grandchil- dren: Kelsie Renee’ Packe- bush of Tucson, Ariz., Brenton (Brent) Ryan Packebush of Bend, Ore., and spouse Nathalie, Roc Richard Hodges and Hol- land Joe Hodges of Alba- ny, Ore., Kristopher James Hunt of Silverdale, Wash., and Kyle Andrew Hunt of Dickson, Tenn. A family graveside ser- vice will be held summer 2021 in Florence, Ore. In lieu of flowers, do- nations can be sent to the Western Lane Foundation Scholarship Fund — one of Dick and Barb’s favorite contributions for Siuslaw High School student’s col- lege education in Flor- ence. Burns’s Riverside Chap- el Florence Funeral Home was in charge of arrange- ments. WA M P L E R- B U S S — Margaret Lucille Wampler Buss passed away Nov. 24, 2020. Marge was Born Oct. 17, 1922 at home in Wheeler, Ore., to Lewis S. Wampler and Iva (Gantz) Wampler, Marga- ret was the sixth Margaret of eight Buss children. A t age 8, Marge moved with her family to a land grant homestead south of Flor- ence. Their homestead spanned from Highway 101 to the Pacific Ocean. She attended elementa- ry school at Westlake and Gardiner High School. She graduated from Siu- Early morning fire destroys apartment in 4-plex On Thursday morning, Dec. 3, at 1:55 a.m., emer- gency responders from Siuslaw Valley Fire & Res- cue (SVFR) and Western Lane Ambulance District (WLAD) responded to multiple calls of a struc- ture fire at 2390 Oak St., directly east of Siuslaw Middle School. The apartment fire was within a 4-plex unit of multi-family residences. Florence Police Depart- ment officers were first on scene and assisted in evac- uating the adjoining units to the one which had be- come fully involved. Given that the address was only a few blocks from the main fire station, and under the new 24/7 sched- uling, three firefighters on duty at the station arrived within a few minutes and began an immediate exte- rior fire attack. The initial crew was able to prevent the fire’s spread to any adjacent units. Within minutes, ap- proximately 20 fire and EMS personnel were on scene and able to keep the fire contained within the first apartment, leaving only some minor smoke and water damage to the other three apartments. No injuries of residents or responders were report- ed. The investigation into the cause of the fire was ongoing as of press time Friday. CONGRATULATIONS slaw High School in 1941. Marge married Leslie Walter Buss in Eugene on Nov. 2, 1944. They had two children, Sharon and Les (Butch). Marge was a great mom. She was a homemaker and loved her extensive family. She also loved playing table tennis, bocce ball, pinoch- le, reading, birdwatching, gardening and she was a diehard Portland Trailblaz- ers fan. Marge bowled for several years on a team and made many friends at Holiday Bowl. She brought smiles to many drivers as she walked along Clear Lake Road for exercise into her 80s. Marge’s favorite time of year was spring into sum- mer, when all of her rhodo- dendrons, azaleas and pur- ple petunias were in bloom. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Steve) Hager of Albany; Stepson, Calvin (Gloria) Buss of Swisshome; her brother Rex Wampler of Florence; four grandchildren: Mindie, Matt, Angela and Antho- ny; 13 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grand- child, many nieces, neph- ews and friends. Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Les- lie; her son, Leslie Dean (Butch); her parents; her brothers Bob, Thornton, Everett, Ray, William and Floyd; and her sister, Doris Pifer. She was a beloved daugh- ter, sister, wife, and mother. She lived a long and happy life and will be remem- bered and missed. Her family thanks Northwest Memory Care for making her last months so comfortable and pleas- ant. There are no services planned at this time. In- terment will be at Florence Masonic Cemetery.
