2B | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS Library presenting free virtual concert Saturday The Siuslaw Public Library will present a free virtual concert featuring folksing- er Adam Miller on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m., on the library’s YouTube channel. A local favorite, folksinger and sto- ryteller Miller, from Drain, Ore., will be performing his sing- along concert of Tra- ditional Folksongs of the Winter Holidays. With a virtual concert, people can view live or they can view it later. There is no limit on the number of times to view the concert, nor is it limited to library patrons. The library encourages all to share the link with any family and friends who would enjoy a winter folk- song experience. The easiest way to access the library’s YouTube chan- nel is to visit www.siuslaw- library.info and click on the (and not-so-well- known) folksongs and carols for New Year’s, Hanukkah, Christmas and the Winter Sol- stice. Many of these songs grew out of (and were used in) the old-time American holiday cel- ebration — a season not of Santa Claus COURTESY PHOTO and tinsel trees but of homespun worship, Adam Miller festivity, and song. Usually traveling 70,000 miles a year, from the Ev- erglades to the Arctic Cir- cle, performing live at over 2,000 American public li- braries, Miller has been do- ing virtual, online concerts in this year of pandemic. Miller began his lifelong pursuit of collecting old songs while still in grade school. Armed with an au- diographic memory and a kaleidoscopic musical cu- riosity, his childhood ambi- tion was to learn every song he heard. Today, with a repertoire of thousands of tunes, his traditional folksongs and ballads are the songs of America’s heritage: a win- dow into the soul of our na- tion in its youth. A performer who enlight- ens as well as entertains, he points out fascinating con- nections between events in history and the songs that survived them.
