Kiwanis hosts free drive-through holiday meal for Florence community
K
iwanis Club of Florence
again hosted its free Flor-
ence Community Thanks-
giving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
While continuing a 30-year tradition
in the community, this year had a
new format as people socially dis-
tanced under COVID-19.
“We had a wonderful turnout,” said
event coordinator Shannon Sheets.
“We were able to fully distribute all
of our meals in less than 35 minutes.
Truly a new record, but we didn’t
have much to compare it against.”
Directional signs on Ninth, 10th
and 12th streets led people to drive
past the kitchen at Florence Elks
Lodge #1858, where Kiwanis and
community
volunteers
handed
bagged meals to people in the cars.
Sheets said the first person in line
arrived 90 minutes early for one of
500 meals Kiwanis prepared.
Of those meals, 15 to 20 went to
people without vehicles, who walked
up to the event. Thanks to coordi-
nation between Helping Hands and
Sheets’ family, they were able to heat
up their plates.
“We were able to get a microwave
going and paper plates so the people
who were vehicle-less were able to
warm their meals up as hot as they
wanted and take it wherever they
were going,” Sheets.

Planning Commission moves ahead on resolutions
By Mark Brennan
Siuslaw News
The City of Florence Planning
Commission met Tuesday, Nov. 24,
with four resolutions that required
action by commissioners. The reso-
lutions had been previously discussed
by the commission, which was revis-
iting the items for a final discussion
before deciding on the appropriate
action for all three pending issues.
Chairperson John Murphey, who
called the PC to order with all com-
missioners in attendance, introduced
the first action item — Resolution
PC 20 25, submitted by Driftwood
Shores Maintenance. Continuing a
discussion from Nov. 10, this was an
application from Martin Alletson,
on behalf of the Association Owners
Driftwood Shores & Surfside Inn., for
approval of a variance to architectural
requirements for the 80’ x 40’ metal
building constructed at 88427 First
Avenue at the northeast corner of
First Avenue and Falcon Street in the
Commercial District.
Planning Director Wendy FarleyC-
ampbell reviewed the timeline for the
project at Driftwood Shores and pro-
vided four general requests which the
applicant was encouraged to meet be-
fore approval would be given to move
forward.

office released a new chart
identifying 21 counties
currently identified as
“extreme risk,” with Lane
County joining Portland
metro counties Marion

Jackson, Jefferson, Klam-
ath, Linn, Malheur, Mult-
nomah, Polk, Umatilla,

In addition, six counties
— Clatsop, Coos, Crook,
Hood River, Josephine
and Lake — have been
classified as “high risk,”
with four others — Cur-
ry, Harney, Lincoln and
Morrow — determined to
be “moderate risk.”
Only five Oregon coun-
ties — Gilliam, Sherman,
Tillamook, Wallowa and
Wheeler — are categorized
as “lower risk.”
The Oregon Health
Authority will re-examine
county case data next week
to make a final determina-
tion of where each county
