Protect a Species of Con-
servation Concern
The Black Oyster-
catcher is a unique
shorebird of conserva-
tion concern that de-
pends on rocky shore-
line habitats.
During this presenta-
tion, Joe Liebezeit will
share about this bird’s
unique life history, con-
servation
challenges,
and results of the multi-
year monitoring effort.
Since 2015, Portland
Audubon, U.S. Fish &
Wildlife Service, and
coastal partners have
been monitoring this
species along Oregon’s
Coast with the help of a
team of community sci-
entists.
Learn about how this
work is being used to
advance
conservation
of oystercatchers and
Oregon’s rocky habitats
and how you can be in-

• Dec. 5: Lichens and
Lichen Bioindication Sci-
ence
During this presenta-
tion, Doug Glavich will
give a brief introduction
to lichens, survey some
Coast Range lichen spe-
cies, and explore some
from 1B
arenaria
(European
beachgrass) and A. bre-
viligulata
(American
beachgrass), build tall
stable dunes that in-
crease coastal protection
but threaten some native
animal and plant species.
For decades, these
intentionally
plant-
ed but invasive grasses
have presented complex
tradeoffs to land man-
agers trying to balance
conservation and coastal
protection.
It was recently discov-
ered that these two grass
species, which have dif-
ferential effects on dune
shape and native plant
diversity, are hybridiz-
ing.
Rebecca Mostow, a
PhD candidate at Ore-
gon State University, will
tell the story of how this
unexpected
discovery
was made and explain
how you can help map
new hybrids and expand
our understanding of
this unexpected event.
