“The trick is to be in the
world, but never part of it,”
Goertzen said of her
non-doctrine, gentle ideol-
ogy, which always favors
personal freedom, peace
and — first and foremost
— love.
While other seniors her
age “just worry all day
about money and death,”
Goertzen said she puts all
her energy and focus on
helping others.
Bluebird of happiness
in Deadwood
While author Ken
Kesey’s school bus —
known as “Further” — was
featured in Tom Wolfe’s
“The Electric Kool-Aid
Acid Test” and as a Hippie
symbol at the Woodstock
Festival in 1969,
Goertzen’s version is more
of a local Deadwood and
Eugene-area legend
because many Hippie fam-
ilies stayed in the bus
when needing a place to
bed down on a cold night.
“Our Bluebird has
helped many wayward
people seeking shelter,”
explained Goertzen.
Along the way,
Deadwood locals have also
dubbed Goertzen with
another moniker, “Keeper
of the Flame” — a tribute
to her more than 40 years
can get fish that have been
holding and lock-jawed
more active, and increase
the odds of hooking up.
Also, most of the swim-
ming recreation activity
has let up, so fish shouldn’t
be as spooked.
During recent resting
pool counts, the number of
summer steelhead in the
Wilson River was up
slightly from last year, but
still well below the 10-year
average. The majority of
fish observed were in the
upper river.
YAQUINA RIVER: Fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing has
been fair on the Yaquina
River as of late. Last week’s
rain storms moved a few
fish up into the river but
the majority of the fish
remain staging in the estu-
ary waiting for more rain.
Fish are now spread
throughout the tidewater
up to Elk City.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced on the Yaquina/
Big Elk Rivers. The bag
limit for the Yaquina/Big
Elk is 1 wild Chinook per
day and 5 per year for the
2020 season.
COOS RIVER BASIN:
Trout, marine perch species,
salmon
Fishing for rockfish in
the lower Coos Bay estuary
has been decent while fish-
ing along the jetty and sub-
merged rock structures.
Smaller jigs with a twister
tail or 1-ounce jigging
spoons have been working
to catch rockfish and
greenling.
The daily bag limit for
marine fish was recently
increased to 7, which for
boat anglers cannot
include any copper, quill-
back, China rockfish, or
cabezon.
Bank anglers can still
retain one copper, quill-
back or China rockfish and
1 cabezon as part of their
daily bag limit. Boat and
bank anglers are also
allowed 2 lingcod per day.

of service to people in the
community.
Given Goertzen’s impact
and influence as
Deadwood’s First Lady, no
doubt those within the
community will carry the
torch and become the
keepers of the flame that
shone so brightly for the
past 50 years — and into
the years ahead.

rain event scheduled to
arrive late next week.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Siuslaw River is 1 wild
Chinook per day and 1 per
year for the 2020 season.
Trout fishing in the
Siuslaw basin (including
Lake Creek) is open until
Oct. 31 and provides a
great, often overlooked
opportunity into the fall
months.
ALSEA RIVER: Fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing
remains steady on the
Alsea with some days bet-
ter than others but anglers
are catching fish every day.
The lower sections of the
tidewater have slowed
down as many of the fish
are now holding in the
upper portions of the estu-
ary.
Last week’s rain pushed
some fish up into the river
but the majority of fish are
still staging in the tidewa-
ter. The dry conditions this
week will keep fish staging
in the estuary waiting for
the next rain event.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 sea-
son bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Alsea River is 1 wild
Chinook per day and 5
per year for the 2020 sea-
son.
Remember, due to low
forecasted returns for the
2020 season bag limits
have been reduced. The
bag limit for the Alsea
River is 1 wild Chinook
per day and 5 per year for
the 2020 season.
Cutthroat trout fishing
is open on the Alsea River
until Oct. 31.
SALMON
RIVER:
Cutthroat trout, fall
Chinook
Fall Chinook fishing
improved on the Salmon
River with last week’s
rainstorms. Many fish
moved up into the river
and into the hatchery
providing some good
opportunity for the bank
anglers. This week’s low
and dry conditions will
hold the majority of fish
in the estuary waiting for
the next rain event sched-
uled to arrive late next
week.

fall rains have cooled the
water temperatures and
will have the summer
steelhead on the bite once
again.
Fall Chinook fishing
continues to be steady on
the Siletz. Anglers are
catching fish every day and
are now spread throughout
the system. Last week’s rain
pushed a good number of
fish up into the river but
the river dropped quickly
and now the majority of
fish will continue to hold
in the estuary waiting for
the next big rain event.
Due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Siletz River is 1 wild
chinook per day and 5 per
year for the 2020 season.
Cutthroat trout fishing
is open in the Siletz basin
until Oct. 31. This is a
great time to target the
larger sea-run cutthroat
that move into the rivers
this time of year.
WILSON
RIVER:
Chinook, steelhead, cut-
throat trout
The Wilson is predicted
to come up almost a foot
with this week’s rains; that
should be enough to start a
few Chinook upstream.
Summer steelhead fish-
ing has been slow should
pick up with this week’s
rain and provide a good
opportunity. The rain and
change in temperatures
