Fishing
from 1B
tidewater. Last week’s rain
didn’t move many fish up
into the river so the major-
ity of fish are staging in the
tidewater waiting for the
next big rain event sched-
uled to arrive late next
week.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Siuslaw River is 1 wild
Chinook per day and 1 per
year for the 2020 season.
Trout fishing in the
Siuslaw basin (including
Lake Creek) is open until
Oct. 31 and provides a
great, often overlooked
opportunity into the fall
months.
ALSEA RIVER: Fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing
remains steady on the
Alsea with some days bet-
ter than others but anglers
are catching fish every day.
The lower sections of the
tidewater have slowed
down as many of the fish
are now holding in the
upper portions of the estu-
ary.
Last week’s rain pushed
some fish up into the river
but the majority of fish are
still staging in the tidewa-
ter. The warm and dry con-
ditions this week will keep
fish staging in the estuary
waiting for the next rain
event.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Alsea River is 1 wild
Chinook per day and 5 per
year for the 2020 season.
Remember, due to low
forecasted returns for the
2020 season bag limits
have been reduced. The
bag limit for the Alsea
River is 1 wild Chinook per
day and 5 per year for the
2020 season.
Cutthroat trout fishing
is open on the Alsea River
until Oct. 31.
SALMON
RIVER:
Cutthroat trout, fall
Chinook
Fall Chinook fishing
improved on the Salmon
River with last week’s rain-
storms. Many fish moved
up into the river and into
the hatchery providing
some good opportunity for
the bank anglers. This
week’s low and dry condi-
tions will hold the majority
of fish in the estuary wait-
ing for the next rain event
scheduled to arrive late
next week.
SILETZ
RIVER:
Summer steelhead, fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Summer steelhead fish-
ing is still slow but condi-
tions are good right now to
catch a late summer steel-
head. The recent fall rains
have cooled the water tem-
peratures and will have the
summer steelhead on the
bite once again.
Fall Chinook fishing
continues to be steady on
the Siletz. Anglers are
catching fish every day and
are now spread throughout
the system. Last week’s rain
pushed a good number of
fish up into the river but
the river dropped quickly
and now the majority of
fish will continue to hold
in the estuary waiting for
the next big rain event.
Due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced. The bag limit for
the Siletz River is 1 wild
chinook per day and 5 per
year for the 2020 season.
Cutthroat trout fishing
is open in the Siletz basin
until Oct. 31. This is a great
time to target the larger
sea-run cutthroat that
move into the rivers this
time of year.
WILSON
RIVER:
Chinook, steelhead, cut-
throat trout
The Wilson is predicted
to come up almost a foot
with this week’s rains; that
should be enough to start a
few Chinook upstream.
Summer steelhead fish-
ing has been slow should
pick up with this week’s
rain and provide a good
opportunity. The rain and
change in temperatures
can get fish that have been
holding and lock-jawed
more active, and increase
the odds of hooking up.
Also, most of the swim-
ming recreation activity
has let up, so fish shouldn’t
be as spooked.
During recent resting
pool counts, the number
of summer steelhead in
the Wilson River was up
slightly from last year, but
still well below the 10-year
average. The majority of
fish observed were in the
upper river.
YAQUINA RIVER: Fall
Chinook, cutthroat trout
Fall Chinook fishing
has been fair on the
Yaquina River as of late.
Last week’s rain storms
moved a few fish up into
the river but the majority
of the fish remain staging
in the estuary waiting for
more rain. Fish are now
spread throughout the
tidewater up to Elk City.
Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season
bag limits have been
reduced on the Yaquina/
Big Elk Rivers. The bag
limit for the Yaquina/Big
Elk is 1 wild Chinook per
day and 5 per year for the
2020 season.
COOS RIVER BASIN:
Trout, marine perch spe-
cies, salmon
Fishing for rockfish in
the lower Coos Bay estuary
has been decent while fish-
ing along the jetty and sub-
merged rock structures.
Smaller jigs with a twister
tail or 1-ounce jigging
spoons have been working
to catch rockfish and
greenling. The daily bag
limit for marine fish was
recently increased to 7,
which for boat anglers can-
not include any copper,
quillback, China rockfish,
or cabezon.
Bank anglers can still
retain one copper, quill-
back or China rockfish and
1 cabezon as part of their
daily bag limit. Boat and
bank anglers are also
allowed 2 lingcod per day.
Temporary wild fall
Chinook regulations are in
effect starting Aug. 1 for
salmon anglers fishing in
Coos Bay. Anglers cannot
harvest no more than one
(1) adult wild Chinook
salmon daily/five (5) for
the period of Aug 1 – Dec
31 from all waters of Coos
River basin, Floras Creek/
New River, and Sixes River.
See specific rules for
Floras/New River and
Sixes.
Salmon fishing was slow
over the past week. The
anglers having the best
success are trolling the
SOMAR to the forks of the
Millcoma/South Fork Coos
rivers.
TENMILE
LAKES:
Trout, warmwater species,
largemouth bass
Topwater bass fishing
has been very good the
past week on Tenmile Lake.
Anglers have also caught
bass using shallow diving
crankbaits or wacky rigged
stick baits. As the aquatic
vegetation starts to die off,
largemouth bass will move
to harder structures like
submerged logs.
Yellow perch fishing has
been excellent this past
week. Yellow perch have
been in 15-18 feet of water
and are biting on small jigs
or a worm on a hook. Some
of the yellow perch har-
vested have measured up
to 13 inches long. If you
fish and area for 10-15
minutes without a bite, it’s
time to move to another
location.
The wild coho fishery
opened on Tenmile Lake
on Oct. 1. Anglers are
allowed to harvest 1 wild
coho per day and 5 for the
season in aggregate with
Siltcoos and Tahkenitch
lakes. A couple anglers
were trolling for coho this
past weekend on Tenmile
Lake but the water level is
very low, and it will be a
while before significant
numbers of coho arrive.
UMPQUA
RIVER,
SOUTH: CLOSED
The
entire
South
Umpqua and tributaries
closed after Sept. 15 as part
of the annual closure to
protect salmon.
PACIFIC OCEAN and
BEACHES: Bottomfish,
salmon, halibut, surfperch
Bottomfishing is open to
all depths. The daily bag
limit for marine fish was
increased to 7 through the
end of the year. But anglers
must release all cabezon,
