It sports acres of sand dunes with slopes for begin- ners up to advanced, as well as lessons and sandboard rentals. “We’ve already had some people say, ‘Hey, we saw you won this award. You get great reviews and we want to come try this,’” Beale said. And right now is the perfect time. According to Beale, September and October are some of the best months to get out on the dunes and sand- board. “It’s after the windy season and before the rainy season, and we get our second summer from the heated ocean air,” he said. “So if it was me, and people ask me when’s the best time to come, I tell them, ‘You know, September and October.’” Florence Area Chamber of Commerce announced Sand Master Park’s award in its Weekly Florence Chamber Blast last week. In it, Chamber President Bettina Hannigan said, “Way to go Sand Master Park — congratulations on this fantastic accolade. We appreciate all the sup- port you bring to our Florence community.” In addition, the City of Florence also hon- ored the park in January as Mayor Joe Henry proclaimed Florence as the Sandboarding Capital of the World. “What I think it will do for the area in gener- al is help bring more tourism to Florence,” Beale said. “We got these two big awards right here, and that’s right through the pan- demic. Maybe that’s why we’re so busy too — people are just hear- ing more and more about it. ‘Hey, this is this is the Sandboard Capital of the World and they won this award.’ People want to know what’s going on. They want to try it.” While it hasn’t been as big a year for out-of- country visitors, Beale said plenty of people are coming to Florence and stopping by Sand Master Park. “A lot of people are vacationing local now, so we’re getting not as many foreign citizens, but a lot of people from Eugene, Seattle and Portland, and actually getting a lot of Californians, too,” he said. “Normally we get a lot more Canadians and Asians, and we’re just not getting people from those places as much this year. But they defi- nitely want to sand- board. They come from all over the world to sandboard.” The park rents out sand boards — “We’ve got literally the largest selection in the world,” Beale said — in multi- ple sizes, styles and brands. “When people come here, they can actually try boards — pretty much any style or size and then figure out what it is they want to pursue,” he said. Then, if they take the lessons offered, people generally get the hang of sandboarding rela- tively quickly. “If the person has boarding experience, like snowboarding, skateboarding or surf- ing, they’re about half- way there,” Beale added. “After a few good ses- sions, they could proba- bly ride at that same level. They’re doing all the same tricks, just on sand.” Not everyone will be able to excel right away, “but we do have sleds, and sleds are very pop- ular. It’s something that anybody can do and takes no skill,” he said. “But really, people are coming here to have a good time. So even if they don’t do well, they still have a great time.” Those who do pick up sandboarding are encouraged to compete in the annual Sand Master Jam competi- tions hosted here twice a year. This international competition had to be canceled this year. Still, people are still getting out in the sand. “We developed a board that does very well on wet sand,” said Beale, who also owns Venomous Sandboards. “That’s extended our season pretty much year-round. … It went from three to four good season months and now it’s nine months.” He added that Sand Master Park closes in January and February due to the rain. “Then, when spring break kicks in in March, we’re busy again. The whole town gets a rush of tourism at that time, too,” Beale said. To schedule your adventure with Doctor Dune, call Sand Master Park at 541-997-6006 or visit SandMasterPark. com. Beale concluded by thanking the people who made Sand Master Park’s recent awards possible. “I think there’s more to come,” he said. OPRD you’ll wear that’s Coast Guard approved for the water activity, and wear it.” The COVID-19 pan- demic and limited staff and resources adds more safety reminders to outdoor visits, says Chris Havel, OPRD as- sociate director. “Our limited park staff and volunteers continue to do their best to keep parks and bathrooms clean, but visitors can help them,” Havel says. “If you bring something in and would usually throw it in a trash can, please take it home with you instead if you can. “We don’t have the staff to empty trash cans as often as we would like and the service you have come to expect. “We also remind visitors that face cov- erings are required in restrooms and when a minimum 6-foot dis- tance can’t be main- tained at trailheads, trails and other crowd- ed areas,” he adds. “And lastly, have a back-up plan for your visit. If the parking lot is full, don’t park on the road. Local law enforcement may ticket your car or have it towed.” More information about open state parks, visiting and camping is available at stateparks. oregon.gov.
