SIUSLAW RIVER: Cutthroat
trout Fall Chinook
Fall Chinook fishing opens on
the Siuslaw River on Aug. 1.
Fishing is typically slow during
the beginning of August but usu-
ally picks up by the end of the
month. Anglers are reminded
that due to low forecasted
returns for the 2020 season bag
limits have been reduced. The
bag limit for the Siuslaw River is
1 wild Chinook per day and 1
per year for the 2020 season.
Trout fishing opened in the
Siuslaw basin (including Lake
Creek) on May 22 and has great
opportunities to catch a trout
throughout the summer months.

things start to pick up at the end

ast weekend, Trevor Denning
rolled into the Siuslaw Interpretive
Center, proudly displaying his
ReActive Adaptations custom offroad
handcycle. The 2014 Siuslaw grad want-
ed to show his hometown his new
wheels and thank some of the people
who helped make them possible.
Denning received his $14,000 bike in
late 2019 due in part to his own crowd-
funding and a generous grant from The
Good Deed Project, a 501c3 non-profit
founded by Florence resident Cindy
Wobbe. As the COVID-19 pandemic
progressed, it was more and more difficult to
visit the area.
“We got the bike in early November, and I’ve
just been in college and everything. Then, with
COVID happening, I haven’t formally been
able to thank Cindy,” said Denning, a junior at
Oregon State University. “I wanted to meet up
with her and formally say ‘thank you’ and let
her see the bike.”
Wobbe met Denning and his girlfriend
Sarah Nelson at the park in front of the
Siuslaw River Bridge, where she kept saying
the Bomber model was different than she
expected.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the out-
come,” she said. “To be able to see it in person

experience of the participants.
It would be unfair for a Siu-
slaw High School varsity team
to have a contest against, say, a
middle school in Eugene.
As we have all observed a va-
riety of athletic competitions,
it is fair to say competitors —
both individuals and teams
— have been selected to play
against each other using a set of
rules governing the game.
Th is includes players who
are close to the same age and
experience level; parents have
shown documentation for age-
group competitions to be fair.
Watching the NFL fi nals of
the Punt, Pass and Kick com-
petition on television, I saw one
13-year-old participant with a
full beard.
You can rest assured parents
of boys competing against this
young man demanded proof of
age.
In 1962, I competed in what
was then called the Ford Punt,
Pass and Kick Contest. Th ere
was but one age classifi cation
and I kicked my best kick ever
to win the local competition.
I was awarded a small tro-
phy and a San Francisco 49ers
jacket. Th e PPK did not have a
higher level of competition at
that time. But when the NFL
took over the PPK, it divid-
ed competitors into three age
groups to allow younger play-
ers a chance to have success. It
wasn’t until years later that the
NFL added age groups for girls
participating in the PPK.
I also competed in the an-
nual Elks Free Th row compe-
tition while in the fi ft h grade
in Hermiston, Ore. Th ere were
no age groups for competition
at that time. I won my grade
school contest and then went
on to shoot for the city champi-
onship. Mike Peters, an eighth-
grade basketball player from
Hermiston Junior High School,
won by making 46 of 50 free
throws. He went on to compete
for the state title.
