2A | SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARIES STROUD—On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, John Randall “Arky” Stroud passed away from advanced lung cancer at the age of 80. His symptoms came on quite rapidly and he died in peace at his home in Spring- field, Ore. Arky and his family came to Oregon from Arkansas, thus the nickname. They set- tled in Ma- pleton and he began 7th grade at Maple- ton middle school and graduat- ed from Maple- John ton High Stroud School. It was in school he met Gary Pru- ett and they became lifelong friends and his close confi- dante since middle school. Gary spent a lot of time over the years with John tell- ing stories, watching movies and sharing books. His sense of humor and love of prac- tical and not- so-practical jokes have made for some great stories throughout the years. John made logging his chosen profession and over the years became known as being quite good at it. He managed several large log- ging companies on the Or- egon coast before going into business for himself. In 1990, John started his own company, Silver Strand Logging based out of Flor- ence, Ore. It was during his logging days that he developed a long and cherished friend- ship with Don Davidson of Davidson Industries. For many years he and Don would meet regularly for breakfast at the Ginger- bread Village. John was preceded in death by his wife, Ida Stroud, in 2005. He is survived by his three grown children: Kathy Lundquist, Troy Stroud (Kim) and Debby Ellingsen (Bob); six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and his brother Eugene Stroud of Florence. Armstrong, 77, passed a w a y peaceful- ly Aug. 6, 2020, at his F l ore n c e home. T o m was born Nov. 18, Thomas 1942, in Armstrong H a v r e , Mont., to Dorothy (Baumgartel) and Fredrick Armstrong. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his old- er brother Bernard and his younger brother Steven. After graduating from Havre High School, Class of ‘61, he attended Northern Montana College until his enlistment in the U.S. Navy, where he completed Boot Camp at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes. On May 9, 1964, Tom married his high school sweetheart, Sharon (Jas- mine), in Seattle, Wash., where she was a student at Seattle University. Following a brief honey- moon, Tom flew to Pensaco- la, Fla., where he completed “A” school as a Communica- tions Technician(CT). This was followed by or- ders to go to Naval Security Group, NAVCOMMSTA Sidi Yahi, Morocco, where his bride joined him for the next three years. In 1967, as a member of an operational group on a special SIGINT/COMINT mission, he received a letter and a citation for outstand- ing performance from the Chief of Naval Operations. Upon military discharge in 1968, they made their home in San Francisco, Ca- lif., where Tom worked for Pacific Telephone and grad- uated from San Francisco State University with a BA degree using his GI Bill. Deciding his wife’s dual federal and military career offered more advancement than his own at the time, he supported her IRS and Coast Guard relocations to Seattle, Wash., Philadelphia, Pa., and Washington, DC. In 1991, Tom was recruit- ed by the National Security Agency, completed Federal Law Enforcement Training Center courses in Glynco, Ga., and was certified as a Federal Protective Officer based out of Ft. Meade, Md. He retired from NSA in October 2000, bought a 38’ diesel pusher motor home and spent the next 10 years traveling fulltime. In 2010, Tom and his wife built their “forever home” in the Fawn Ridge East development of Florence, where he also served as HOA President for one term. Tom was also a member of Elks Lodge 1858, and a “happy camper” with the Rolling Elks RV Club. One of his favorite pastimes was joining fellow military veter- ans in the Band of Brothers coffee group, where he often regaled his tablemates with his endless jokes. Tom was notorious for breaking into boisterous laughter midway — and for- getting the punch line! One of Tom’s greatest pleasures was taking his wife to dinner at a favorite local restaurant, followed by a Spanish coffee made by Bill the Bartender at the Waterfront Depot. Tom will long be remem- bered for his larger than life personality and his infec- tious laughter. In lieu of flowers, dona- tions may be made to one’s own favorite charity, the Oregon Coast Military Mu- seum, or to Bristol Hospice Eugene, LLC; 1077 Gateway Loop, Ste. B; Springfield, OR 97477 (541-844-0151) in memory of Thomas D. Armstrong, funds to be used for any military Vet-related program.
