8A | WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS Lane County vacancy on Public Health Advisory Committee The Lane County Board of Commissioners is seek- ing applications from citi- zens interested in serving on the Public Health Advi- sory Committee. The com- mittee advises the Board of Commissioners on a wide variety of topics and issues. Details about the commit- tee and its composition, meeting schedule etc., are listed below. The Public Health Ad- visory Committee makes recommendations to the Lane County Pub- lic Health Administrator and advises the Board of Health and the Board of Commissioners on mat- ters of public health, plan- ning, policy development, control measures, funding, public education and ad- vocacy; and acts in a com- munity liaison capacity to provide a link between the community and the Public Health Division. The committee meets the second Monday of the month from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. There are two vacancies on the committee at pres- ent. Both vacancies are for a complete term of four years, commencing upon appointment and ending on Aug. 31, 2024. One position is desig- nated to be filled by an at-large community mem- ber, “informed on and in- terested in public health matters.” The second vacancy is designated to be filled by a person “licensed by this state as [a] health care practitioner.” The Public Health Advi- sory Committee consists of 12 members with a broad public health interest and concern, not limited to single interests or issues. Committee represen- tation shall include geo- graphic, socioeconomic and professional interests. Membership shall include: five persons “licensed by this state as health care practitioners” and seven “persons who are informed on and interested in public health matters,” per ORS 431.477. Public members with di- verse backgrounds are pre- ferred. County employees are not eligible for mem- bership. The committee seeks to have membership that re- flects the diversity of Lane County, including but not limited to racial, ethnic, gender, age, socioeconom- ic and geographical diver- sity. The Public Health Ad- visory Committee also strives to meet the goals set out by the Lane Coun- ty Board of Commission- ers to acknowledge and address the root causes of inequities in Lane Coun- ty services and outcomes, work with community members and staff to in- vent or find antiracist pol- icies that can eliminate the racial inequities that exist and use an antiracist and racial equity lens to assess current and future policies and programs. The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 27. Applications are avail- able online at www.lane- county.org/volunteer and in the Board of Commis- sioners’ Office located in the Public Service Build- ing, 125 East Eighth Av., Eugene. This free bus service, for cancer patients who are receiving radiation treatment, oper- ates Monday through Fri- day, all year long. A driver’s shift requires approximate- ly five hours, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Volunteers typi- cally drive once per month. The Friends’ bus is a 14-passenger vehicle. A commercial driver’s license is not required. “It’s about the same size as a small RV,” said Bart Meal- er, Chief Operating Officer for the organization. As a result of the current COVID-19 pandemic, the organization has taken sev- eral steps to help ensure the safety and health of drivers and passengers. Some of these steps are: • All passengers includ- ing the driver will wear face coverings while on the bus. • Everyone will have their temperatures taken prior to boarding the bus. • We have limited the number of passengers on the bus to four. This allows for 6ft of physical distanc- ing. • The bus will be cleaned and sanitized daily at the end of each trip. “Cancer patients have to travel to Eugene or Spring- field daily for these radia- tion treatments — it’s 160 miles roundtrip from Flor- ence,” Mealer said. “Riding the bus helps ease the stress during this difficult time.” For over 34 years the Friends of Florence, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has transported patients roundtrip from Florence to the Willamette Valley Cancer Institute and to the Oregon Urology Institute. The bus leaves from Peace Harbor Hospital and, when requested, has pick-up lo- cations in Mapleton and Veneta. The Friends maintain about 22 active drivers. “Riding the bus also of- fers companionship for patients who are mak- ing this trip every day. It shows them that they’re not alone,” said Mealer. “It’s a traveling support group.” If you are interested in driving for the Friends of Florence, contact Mealer at 541-997-8663. OHA announces new mask requirements website Face coverings, or masks, are now required statewide for all adults and, starting July 24, for all children age 5 and up in all indoor public spaces and outdoors when physical distancing isn’t possible. To help Oregonians un- derstand the requirement, the Oregon Health Au- thority has created a web- site resource that aims to be a clearinghouse of the latest information about face coverings and masks, from requirements to FAQs to tips about how to effectively wear them. Controlling the spread of COVID-19 in Oregon requires all of us to do our part. Emerging evi- dence shows that wearing a mask help can help pro- tect against the spread and catching of COVID-19. The virus is spread by respiratory droplets when people cough, sneeze, talk, laugh or sing. Face coverings help con- tain those droplets. The virus can be spread by people who do not have symptoms and likely don’t know they are infected. When properly worn, a face covering should cover a person’s nose and mouth and fit snugly against the sides of the face. Many types of face coverings can be used, including hand- made cloth face coverings, scarves, bandanas and more. They should be washed frequently after using. COVID 19 is widespread in the state. All Orego- nians can work together to flatten the curve and lower our risk of getting it or giv- ing it to others by: • Covering our faces when six feet of physical distancing is not possible; • Avoiding large crowds and limit our social gath- erings; • Washing our hands; • Staying home if we’re sick.
