The theme of the contest was “Life Does Not Rewind: Choose Life Not Drugs.” The contest was open to all sixth, seventh and eighth grade students, with the length of each essay limited to 250 words or less. Judging was based on closeness to theme, neatness, originality and correct grammatical struc- ture. The deadline was Dec. 15. Patrick La Nasa was the local Elks Drug Awareness Committee chair for 2019-20. He canvassed the local schools and called on the principals and staffs to en- courage participation in the pro- gram. In this area, two eighth grade students from Reedsport Charter High school were the only ones to respond. However, the students who did participate placed first and sec- ond in the Oregon wide compe- tition.
