BARGAINS OF THE MONTH TRUE VALUE HARDWARE Art from 1B created collages, sym- metry studies, oil pas- tels, mixed media nature pieces and drawings. In third and fourth, students designed mixed media pieces inspired by the work of artist Mary Blair, paint- ings and watercolor and graphite pieces. As for fifth and sixth grades, these students made papier-mâché masks, which they painted with acrylics, water color and inks, ink wash painting in the style of artist Sumi-e, mixed media collages and 3-D paper collage. In middle school, stu- dents branched out even further. They made linoleum block prints, nesting envelope dolls, papier-mâché and acryl- ic masks, hand-stitched books, and mixed media mosaics inspired by Pompeii. These students took it still further by “showing their work” with sys- tems of linear equations, designing machines “used to make tasks eas- ier,” creating posters in language arts for “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, and illustrating Baba Yaga for an assignment Little 1750 HIGHWAY 126 DUNES VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTER FLORENCE, OR PHONE (541) 997-8024 from 1B track shed and Jeff threw a distance that would have won a district title. Unfor- tunately, the track coach was unwilling to allow track members to do two sports even though there were few confl icts in meets and games. I had two other baseball players who could have helped the track team in my fi rst two years. Baseball aside, Jeff is in the HOF for his foot- ball leadership and skill in football. Jeff started for four years at quarterback on one of the most suc- cessful four years of Vi- king football. He led the Vikings to four straight state play-off appearances. His quarterback re- cords stood for over 20 years before being bro- ken. Aft er 40 years, Jeff is still in the top 10 in four of the fi ve passing catego- ries for Viking football. High school students had a lot more freedom with their work. Students created mixed media pieces of all kinds, including an anchor with a painted lighthouse; tissue paper and acrylic works; altered books with drawn, painted and lay- ered elements; and paintings, masks and drawings. Students also designed optical art in digital and paper media, hand-tint- ed linoleum block reduction prints, char- coals, graphite, water- colors, shading, self-portraits, triptychs, landscapes and fiber arts. There were works punting yard average. His versatility made coaching Jeff a benefi t to any team. When football ended, Jeff traded cleats for ten- nis shoes. His multi-sport participation strengthened each team he played on. Some readers might think being a three-sport athlete might prevent you from achieving excellence in a future, you’re wrong. Jeff played quarter- back at Southern Oregon University and achieved All-American recognition. When my son played quarterback for head Siu- slaw football coach Tim Dodson, I could not help but compare his playing style to that of Jeff ; it was a good model to follow.
