professionally if their se-
nior season is can-celled.
Few collegiate athletes will
be professional athletes —
yet both the high school
and college parents will
lose the fi nal opportunity
to observe their athlete in
competition.
Th ere are thousands of
parents who have spent
thousands of hours watch-
ing their athlete compete.
Th e years of supporting
their athlete is supposed to
culminate in those senior
seasons.
Th e miles traveled, the
money spent, the bleach-
er-butts and wearing the
sweatshirts
emblazoned
with the team name all
need a season to close a son
or daughter’s career.
Had the senior season
been lost for my children
this is what the communi-
ty of Florence and I would
have missed...
In the 2001 fall season,
the Siuslaw Viking football
team won coach Tim Dod-
son’s fi rst Far West League
championship. Th e passing
combination of quarter-
back Brandon Little to re-
ceiver Jordan Stone result-
ed in several school records
being broken that season

that from happening is to
wear a life jacket — actually
wear it, not just have it in the
boat,” said Ashley Massey,
Public Information Offi-
cer for the Marine Board.
“Make it a habit like putting
on your seatbelt. The reality
is there isn’t time to put one
on in an emergency.”
Boating during COVID-19
When hitting the water,
know the Marine Board’s
recreational boating guide-
lines and practice the fol-
lowing to protect your-
selves and others:
• Explore waterways close
to home. Leave from your
home to the boat and back
so that you don’t have un-
necessary contact with oth-
ers.
— with the fi nal league
game on Hans Petersen
Memorial Field, a convinc-
ing victory over the team
just south of us, would not
have been played. I will al-
ways remember that game.
If it had not been played,
how many remember the
fi nal game of the 2000 sea-
son?
Not me.
Also lost would have
been an undefeated volley-
ball team Far West League
Championship led by fu-
ture SHS hall-of-famer
Haley Hunt. I could not
fi nd the 2001 fall cross
country league results. But
given the competitiveness
of coach Chris Johnson’s
teams, we probably won
either a girls and/or boy’s
title — and it, too, would
have been lost.
In the fall of 2003, the
Siuslaw Viking volleyball
team returned to the state
volleyball tournament. Led
by a team of seniors, the
team battled all season in
the tough Sky-Em league.
Th e fi nal league game
victory over Douglas
earned the Vikings a trip
to state. My personal high-
light of the season was
being able to occasionally
watch all three of my girls
on the court at the same
time. During the Newport
• Be self-sufficient. Carry
needed supplies with you
to minimize non-essential
stops.
• Take time in advance to
see if a boat ramp is open.
Some city and county fa-
cilities are allowing boats
to launch. Visit the Marine
Board’s interactive Boat
Oregon Map to find con-
tact information to a facility
near you. Keep in mind that
even though a ramp may be
open to launching, the re-
strooms may not be. Many
pumpout/dump stations are
operational where facilities
are open.
• Follow the Governor’s
order on physical dis-
tancing. Space out (6-feet
or more) and take turns
launching and re-trieving.
Be patient.
• Maintain a safe distance
tournament that season,
it was a diving dig by Mi-
randa, a cross-court set by
Charnae and a kill by Alau-
ra that became a momen-
tum-changing play.
My wife and I were able
to limit bleacher time as
all three of our girls played
varsity that year.
In fall of 2005, the Siu-
slaw Vikings volleyball
team was loaded with se-
niors; their goal was to put
some paint on the wall.
Th e Sky-Em league was
tough but the Vikings were
tougher as they pounded
Marist in the last game to
win the league title. Th at
season would be the last
time Miranda would play
team volleyball.
If it had been cancelled,
Siuslaw would have less
paint on the wall — and I
would have fewer newspa-
per clippings in my album.
Once again, the Vi-
kings headed to state. Th is
time the volleyball team
would lose a tough game
to Estacada. Let us just
say the number of lift s
called against Siuslaw were
enough for Estacada to win
a game without ever hitting
the ball — not to men-
tion the undefeated state
championship football title
would have been lost that
fall.
at a fuel dock or loading up

a marine gate, fuel pump
or other objects frequent-
ly touched by others, wash
your hands or use hand san-
itizer.
• Families living in the
same household can contin-
ue to boat as a family.
• The CDC is now recom-
mending that everyone wear
a face-covering in public.
Protect yourself and your
family before and after your
time on the water by wear-
ing a face covering.
• Expect some facilities to
have reduced launch lanes
or alternate-space parking
closures following social
distancing orders to prevent
crowding.
Follow all statewide and
local area rules.
Th e cancellation of any
season is disappointing to
so many people. Memories
are forever of those last sea-
son competitions. My hope
is that the Siuslaw Vikings
and the Mapleton Sailors
will have determined ath-
letes next year.
To all athletes: Play every
season as though it could
be your last.
Th ere are senior athletes
in high school and college
who wish they could have
one more.
Next week: We will begin
a series of articles about
Siuslaw Hall of Fame mem-
bers.
