OBITUARIES
JONES—Barbara Jones
passed away April 7, 2020,
after a long descent into
Alzheimer’s dementia.
Barbara was born Aug.
5, 1937, in Wuppertal,
Germany, the youngest
of
four

her sister,

ka.

with Austrian village fami-
lies during the last years of
World War II.
All in her family sur-
vived the war.
Later, when her family
could rent an apartment,
Barbara began learning
to play guitar. At age 12,
she became the youngest
member of a community
mandolin orchestra. Her
playing and singling were
in great demand for home
parties with family and
friends.
Her spirited wanderlust
spurred her to study En-
glish, acquire a green card,
and sail to New York in
June 1964.
Once on board, she met
Richard, a fellow musician.
This began a relationship
that led to marriage and
lasted more than 54 years.
During that time, with
characteristic energy, de-
termination and natural
ability, Barbara not only
raised a family, kept a pro-
ductive garden, became an
excellent seamstress and
faithfully attended then
led exercise classes, she
also blossomed into an ac-
complished artist.
She first mastered toll
painting, then oil and
watercolor painting. Her
flowers, still-lifes, land-
scapes and painted Christ-
mas balls showed metic-
ulous attention to detail
and — most importantly
— life.
With early retirement,
Barbara and Richard trav-
eled, cruised, camped
and explored their way
through 24 memorable
years.
Barbara is survived by
her husband, Richard; her
sister, Franziska; sons An-
thony and Thomas and
his wife, Janis, and their
daughter, Sy.
Family and friends will
be invited to a celebration
of life at a later date.

“Gene” B. Nelson, of Flor-
ence, passed away March
20, 2020, in the comfort of
his own home.
Born Nov. 9, 1938 in
Portland, Ore., and known
Lane County shifts transfer stations to summer hours
Lane County’s Glen-
wood and Florence transfer
stations are experiencing
record high customer vol-
umes during peak times,
resulting in longer than
normal wait times and
crowded conditions.
In an effort to reduce
crowds, Lane County is
reminding the community
that its waste disposal sites
have now shifted to sum-
mer operating hours.
In Florence, the transfer
station at 2820 Rhododen-
dron Dr. is open Monday
to Saturday from 8 a.m. to
6 p.m.
The Glenwood site is
now open on Sundays and
the Marcola, Oakridge,
Rattlesnake and Vida trans-
fer stations have expanded
hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Wednesday through Satur-
day.
People are encouraged to
take advantage of these ex-
panded hours.
The times to avoid, if at
all possible, are Saturdays
and Mondays, mid-morn-
ing through the early after-
noon.
Avoiding those days and
times will help the commu-
nity continue to practice
physical distancing and
keep customers and staff
healthy.

response to the COVID-19
public health crisis.
This newsletter, “The
Florence Four,” is intended
to connect local businesses
with resources and sup-
port during the COVID-19
emergency and through-
out the recovery phase.
Each week, the newslet-
ter will feature four new
resources or updates on
different local initiatives
that economic develop-
ment partners in the re-
gion and state are taking.
Businesses have been
automatically subscribed
to the newsletter if the
City had an email address
on file in association with
