2B | SATURDAY, APRIL 4, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS Golf from 1B play have been cancelled or rescheduled to later in the year. Golfers can make a tee time online in 10-min- ute intervals and play as a single or up to a group of four. We would rather players walk but people can rent a sterilized cart and ride by themselves,” Remer said. “Players can buy a golf voucher through our website or call and give a credit card over the phone. We’ve removed sand rakes, ball washers and water coolers from the golf course along with cov- ering the cups.” Another option is the Siuslaw Rod and Gun Club, 87227 Munsel Lake Rd., where the club has posted very clear instruc- tions as to how and when the gun ranges can be used. Steve Baggin, a volun- Fishing from 1B River have been very suc- cessful catching steelhead. • Surfperch fishing usu- ally sees an uptick in spring and early summer. MID COAST LAKES Stocking of mid-coast lakes are scheduled through spring. Warmwater fisheries will start up again when we get some warmer weather later this spring. SIUSLAW RIVER: win- ter steelhead Winter steelhead fish- ing has slowed down on the Siuslaw system as well. The river is low and clear, making the conditions tougher for catching steel- head. Anglers are still catching fish around the Whitaker Creek area and things should improve when we get another shot of rain. SALMON RIVER: win- ter steelhead Winter steelhead fish- ing is open on the Salmon River. SILETZ RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fish- ing has slowed down on the Siletz River as of late. The low clear water has made for tougher condi- tions and the fishing has slowed. Expect more of the same until we get some more rain. Anglers are still catching fish throughout the system with a mix of hatchery and wild fish. Reminded to keep wild fish in the water and release immediately after landing to minimize nega- tive impacts to these fish. The 4-mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motor- ized vehicles but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend. Anglers can walk/bike in the road during the weekdays. If anglers do walk in, they can park at the 1-mile gate and start from there. ALSEA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fish- ing has slowed down on all sections of the Alsea River. Low water has made for tough conditions throughout the system resulting in slower fishing. The later returning hatchery fish will continue to move in through the month of March and pro- vide opportunities to catch a steelhead. Until we get some rain the lower portions of the river will be the best chance for suc- cess. Reminder: No over- night camping is allowed in vehicles around the NF Alsea hatchery in the parking lot or on any of the roads. The Alsea River receives two different teer at the rod and gun club and a local leader in the veteran community which has a number of active members at the club, said he believes the protec- tion put in place will help to keep members safe. “The range is open to members only, no guests. All events on the range have been cancelled until further notice. The restrooms are closed, and they are asking everyone to maintain six feet from any other shooters,” Baggin said. Additionally, there will be no new member orien- tations and all shooting groups have been cancelled until further notice. The Actions, Trap and Sporting Clay ranges are also com- pletely shut down. The club went even further to persuade members to maintain social distancing requirements by stating on one of the signs at the front gate that “Failure of club members to follow the restrictions will result in the closure of all club facil- ities.” Fortunately for Florence residents, there are ways to break the boredom and monotony of staying home while still following the new reality being faced at this time. For those not interested in golfing or make a trip to the Siuslaw Rod and Gun Club, get outdoors for a short period and take a short break from the new normal. PGA pro Remer sug- gests simple, but import- ant, reasons for taking up the sport during a time of stress. “Playing golf is a good sport for any age level. It allows different genera- tions a chance to play and learn. If you’re competi- tive, golf has a handicap- stocks of hatchery steel- head, one “traditional” stock that is an early returner with returning wild broodstock that peaks through April. ping system that would allow myself, my 3-year- old and my 73-year-old mother to play in an even match,” Remer said. “Golf is an outdoor sport that can be played in almost any weather. It provides exercise and a mental chal- lenge while promoting honesty and good sports- manship.” Florence Golf Links is located at 1201 35th St.; Ocean Dunes is located at 3345 Munsel Lake Rd.
