2B | WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS Oregon joins Washington in closing Columbia fisheries Plover from 1B to defend their young from the perceived predator. Left alone too long, or too often, eggs or chicks can die from exposure, predators or people. Recreation restrictions occur in designated plo- ver management areas: small stretches of beach along the entire coastline where plovers are nesting or could potentially nest. These areas collectively comprise about 45 miles of Oregon’s 362 miles of shoreline. “Visitors will have ac- Hult from 1B Rules: • Clips can be submit- ted for consideration on Hult Center social media pages by including the hashtag #Hult TalentShow Fishing from 1B Winter steelhead fishing is open on the Salmon River. SILETZ RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Siletz River as of late. The low clear water has made for tougher conditions and the fishing has slowed. Expect more of the same until we get some more rain. Anglers are still catching fish throughout the system with a mix of hatchery and wild fish. Reminded to keep wild fish in the water and release immediately after landing to minimize nega- tive impacts to these fish. The 4-mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehicles but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend. Anglers can walk/bike in the road during the weekdays. If anglers do walk in, they can park at the 1-mile gate and start from there. ALSEA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on all sections of the Alsea River. Low water has made for tough conditions through- out the system resulting in slower fishing. The later returning hatchery fish will continue to move in through the month of March and pro- vide opportunities to catch a steelhead. Until we get some rain the lower por- tions of the river will be the best chance for suc- cess. Reminder: No over- night camping is allowed in vehicles around the NF Alsea hatchery in the parking lot or on any of the roads. The Alsea River receives two different stocks of hatchery steelhead, one “traditional” stock that is an early returner and peaks in December/ January and a later return- salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River, effec- tive last Thursday, March 26. In a press release dis- tributed Wednesday after- noon, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced its decision to temporarily close recre- ational fishing and shell- fishing statewide in the wake of Washington Gov. Jay Inslee’s order on actions to limit the spread of coronavirus (COVID- 19.) O re gon an d Washington jointly man- age fisheries in the main- stem Columbia River bor- dering both states and seek to have concurrent regulations. At this time, other ongoing fisheries in Oregon remain unchanged, and fishing for species other than salmon and steelhead will still be allowed in Oregon portions of the Columbia River as described in per- manent rules. Anglers are reminded to follow the rules for social distancing and maintain at least 6 feet of distance from other peo- ple and minimize non-es- sential travel, as directed in an executive order issued earlier this week by Oregon Gov. Kate Brown. ODFW also asks that anglers and the public help ensure the safety of ODFW employees they may encounter in the field who are doing their jobs by maintaining adequate social distance. As with the Washington closure, ODFW antici- pates the Columbia River salmon and steelhead fishing closure lasting at least until April 8. cess to hundreds of miles of beaches that have no seasonal restrictions,” said Laurel Hillmann, Ocean Shores Specialist for Ore- gon State Parks. “By plan- ning your trip, you can en- joy the coast and help keep these special birds safe.” Detailed maps can be found on the Oregon State Parks website at oregon. gov/plovers and on the Siuslaw National Forest website at go.usa.gov/xE- h2h. Visitors to the Oregon Dunes National Recre- ation Area (ODNRA) can review go.usa.gov/xdwYQ to identify unrestricted recreation areas and in- formation on riding motor vehicles on the sand. New restrictions on North Umpqua Spit Later this year, visitors to a 2.6-mile stretch of the North Umpqua Spit with- in the ODNRA will see new restrictions, as plovers have returned to the area to nest after a long absence. Restrictions will be in place on the portion of beach south of Sparrow Park Road to the jetty, which is managed by the Siuslaw National Forest and has long been des- ignated as critical plover habitat. The birds’ return prompts the same restric- tions that apply at other plover beaches: the beach will remain open to trav- el by foot or horse on the wet, hard-packed sand only, with dry sand areas off-limits. “Visitors to the North Umpqua Spit will still have full access to more than three miles of beach north of the plover area,” Burns said. The date for when re- strictions go into effect at North Umpqua spit has not been set. Visitors should look for signs and check the Siuslaw Nation- al Forest website at go.usa. gov/xEh2h for updates. adults have steadily in- creased, from 149 in 2009 to 423 in 2019. These two stocks com- bine to provide winter steelhead fishing opportu- nities from late November through March. Trout fishing in streams will reopen on May 22. WILSON RIVER: steel- head Access may be limited and many boat ramps and campgrounds on the Wilson have been closed for the time being. The Wilson is still a lit- tle low and clear but is predicted to be on the rise this weekend, which could get steelhead moving again. There are hatchery and wild steelhead throughout the system. Anglers are reminded that the Little North Fork and South Fork will close to steelhead fishing at the end of the month. Trout season will reopen on May 22. YAQUINA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead is open on the Yaquina and Big Elk systems for the season. January through March is the typical peak for winter steelhead in the Yaquina/Big Elk. • Trout stocking sched- ule offline We have taken down the online trout stocking schedule in order to pre- vent public crowding at waterbodies when we deliver hatchery fish. We will continue stocking trout but we will deliver on a slightly different schedule and at some dif- ferent locations to avoid a rush of anglers showing up along with the hatchery truck. We will continue to stock popular lakes and ponds as long as people do their part and con-tinue to use social distancing. We want to spread out angling effort in terms of timing and physical distance between anglers by not sharing our stocking schedule with the public. Thank you for under- standing and doing your part to keep each other safe. NOTE: Local ODFW offices do not have access to the trout stocking schedule either. PACIFIC OCEAN AND BEACHES: bottomfish, salmon, halibut, surfperch Bottomfishing is now open to fish at all depths. Fishing for lingcod has been good when an-glers can get out on the ocean. The daily bag limit for marine fish is 5 of which only one can be a copper, quillback or China rock- fish. Anglers are also allowed 2 lingcod per day. The harvest of cabezon will not open until July 1. Anglers are also allowed 2 lingcod per day. The harvest of cabezon will not open until July 1. Anglers may also choose to fish the offshore longleader fishery outside of the 40-fathom regulato- ry line, which is open.
