SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, MARCH 28, 2020 | 3B Active from 1B paired with strength train- ing exercises. Take to the great outdoors near home to get in a good cardio workout, including bicy- cling and playing rowdily with kids or pets. Walking can constitute a cardio workout if one goes at a brisk pace of Little - right. from 1B Defensive special- ists are inserted in late innings to protect a lead. Once again, high schools Little from 1B Reservoir, Cooper Creek Reservoir, Empire Lakes, Galesville Reservoir, Garrison Lake and Loon Lake. • Jackson County Parks and ramps are closed, Josephine County Parks day use and boat ramps are open. Learn more about the specific water bodies below. • There are limited boat ramps available in the Upper Rogue. • Lost Creek Lake is a great location to bank fish as trails are open and there is ample bank access. • Bank anglers willing to do a little walking on around three miles per hour. Walking on an incline also can constitute vigorous exercise that’s on par with running or bik- ing, particularly when it’s a steep hill. Inside, people can do lateral shuffles between two points on a floor, set up a circuit of jumping jacks or skip rope to keep your heart rate up. Set up a home gym With a few barbells, dumbbells and a weight bench, it’s easy to create a home gym in a base-ment or garage. Extra equip- ment for resistance train- ing equipment or an ellip- tical machine can be added to make the gym more complete. A home gym also can be a place to do strength and stretching exercises like yoga or Pilates. A big part of this is ded- icating a workout space. Areas away from the bus- tle of the household are great spaces to devote to home gyms. The fewer the distrac- tions, the more likely a person will commit to their exercise regimen. Specialized equipment While it may not be within everyone’s means to purchase all new equip- ment, a few key pieces of equipment may help. These include elastic resis- tance bands, a set of dumbbells and stability balls. These items won’t use up a ton of room for storage but will still allow people to work on strength and core muscles. While people are asked to limit their time outside, home gyms can be a con- venient way to maximize physical activity and help people maintain muscle mass. Staying fit can also improve physical strength, reduce seniors’ fear of falls, increase confidence and improve sleep. seldom have the numbers of players for these chang- ing situations. It used to be that the re-entry rule allowed play- ers to be substituted in a high school baseball game and then return to action. Th e Brookings baseball coach used this to his ad- vantage. When we played them at their fi eld in 1979, he suit- ed up the track’s short-re- lay team. If a batter made it to fi rst base, he substituted the track runner to steal second- and third-base. Th ese runners put pressure on our defense when they entered the game. Aft er they scored or the inning ended, they would return to the bench and watch the rest of the game. When I played base- ball at Pacifi c University, I started in the outfi eld as a JV player. Once it was determined I swung and missed more than making contact, I became a prac- tice pitcher. When I started striking out my teammates, I was moved to the mound. I was a relief pitcher and late-season starter my junior year. I became the number one pitcher my se- nior season. the Elk River have been very successful catching steelhead. • Surfperch fishing usu- ally sees an uptick in spring and early summer. MID COAST LAKES Stocking of mid-coast lakes are scheduled through spring. Warmwater fisheries will start up again when we get some warmer weather later this spring. SIUSLAW RIVER: win- ter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Siuslaw system as well. The river is low and clear, making the conditions tougher for catching steel- head. Anglers are still catching fish around the Whitaker Creek area and things should improve when we get another shot of rain. SALMON RIVER: win- ter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing is open on the Salmon River. SILETZ RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Siletz River as of late. The low clear water has made for tougher conditions and the fishing has slowed. Expect more of the same until we get some more rain. Anglers are still catching fish throughout the system with a mix of hatchery and wild fish. Anglers are reminded to keep wild fish in the water and release immediately after landing to minimize negative impacts to these fish. The 4-mile bridge (aka Steel Bridge) in the Siletz gorge is open to motorized vehicles but is only open to public vehicles on the weekend. Anglers can walk/bike in the road during the weekdays. If anglers do walk in, they can park at the 1-mile gate and start from there. ALSEA RIVER: winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on all sections of the Alsea River. Low water has made for tough conditions through- out the system resulting in slower fishing. The later returning hatchery fish will continue to move in through the month of March and pro- vide opportunities to catch a steelhead. Until we get some rain the lower por- tions of the river will be the best chance for suc- cess. Reminder: No over- night camping is allowed in vehicles around the NF Alsea hatchery in the parking lot or on any of the roads. The Alsea River receives two different stocks of hatchery steelhead, one “traditional” stock that is an early returner and peaks in December/ January and a later return- ing wild broodstock that peaks January-March. These two stocks combine to provide winter steel- head fishing opportunities from late November through March. Trout fishing in streams will reopen on May 22. WILSON RIVER: steel- head Access may be limited and many boat ramps and campgrounds on the Wilson have been closed for the time being. The Wilson is still a lit- tle low and clear but is predicted to be on the rise this weekend, which could get steelhead moving again. There are hatchery and wild steelhead throughout the system.
