And the waiting game
began.
“The game started at 5:30
p.m.,” he recalled. “I was
scrambling all over the
internet trying to get a live
stream of the game in
Newport. I almost drove up
there. I couldn’t find the live
stream, so I was continually
pressing refresh on my com-
puter, waiting for the score
to pop up.”
Perry had a group text
going with the team, giving
updates, pressing refresh
over and over again. And
then, around 7:30 p.m., it
happened — the score was
posted.
Newport had fallen,
50-60.
AT OGA JUNIOR
TOURNEY
Florence resident Ryan
Klampe played in a
OGA Junior Golf
Tournament this past
week at Tualaltin
Country Club. There
were 15 youth golfers
in the 12- to 13-year-
old age group, where
Klampe placed third
overall.

makes no difference.
“It may not constitute a
playoff, but it’s a playoff
game,” Perry said. “You win,
you get to keep on playing.
You lose, you’re done.”
There are six leagues in
the state for 4A, with each
one of those divisions
receiving two automatic
berths into the state tourna-
ment for a total of 12 teams.
The next eight highest rank-
ing teams from any division
then get an opportunity to
play in four “play-in” games.
“The top-ranked team
left from all the other
leagues is Woodburn,
they’re number one,” Perry
said on Wednesday. “And
we got that eighth spot as
the No. 20 team, so we’ll be
traveling to Woodburn to
play them.”
“Then it took a few extra
minutes to recalculate the
rankings and it showed us at
number 20. That was super
exciting,” Perry said.
The group text blew up
with excitement, but Perry
knew things could change.
“They weren’t going to
freeze the rankings until 10
p.m. when all the other
games were done, so we still
had to wait so we could be
sure,” Perry said. “There
were some kids staying up
late watching it as well. I
told everybody to go to bed
and we’ll figure out when it
happens.”
Then a little after 11 p.m.,
the rankings froze — and
the Vikings were in.
Though technically not a
“playoff ” game but rather a
“play-in” game, to Perry it
After the play-in games,
there will be re-bracketing,
with the 16 remining teams
officially advancing into the
official state playoffs.
As for last night’s game
against Woodburn (after
press deadlines), the Vikings
went in knowing they were
the underdog.
“I know that they
dropped down from 5A last
year,” Perry said. “They’re a
big 4A school, and we’re one
of the two smallest 4A
schools — so they’ve got
more kids. Their team made
it pretty deep in the state
playoffs last year, and they
lost some good guys. But
they have other guys that
have some playoff experi-
ence.”
And
the
league
Woodburn competes in is
also among the 4A’s tough-
est. While Woodburn had
lost the last two games, it
was against top ranked
Cascade and Philomath.
“We’re just happy to have
the opportunity,” said Perry.
The last time Perry
coached a state playoff was
in 2017, when the Vikings
placed second in the Far
West League, losing the
playoff to — ironically —
Newport.
As for making the play-
offs, Perry was proud.
“I’m super excited for
them to get the opportunity.
A playoff game in high
school is not something that
a lot of kids get to do. For
them to do it after a long,
back-and-forth season of
highs and lows, it’s pretty
awesome for them.”
