2A | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARY O’DELL—James Dailen “Dale” O’Dell was born Oct. 1, 1936, in St Lou- is, Mo., to Constance and Benjamin O’Dell. Dale passed away peace- fully in Eugene, Ore., on Feb. 11, 2020, at the age of 83. His wife Mary (Kit- ty) O’Dell was by his side. James O’Dell H e was pre- ceded in death by both of his parents; a younger brother, Gerald O’Dell; a son, Christopher O’Dell; daughter, Kim Zeigler Bales; two stepsons: Greg and Jeffrey Culbertson; and one grandchild, Jake Kaluna. Dale grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of SE Portland. After high school graduation, he went to work for the SP&S Rail- road, starting in the mail- room but soon moved up into executive positions in the finance and real estate departments. SP&S was part of a merg- er which became the Burl- ington Northern Railroad and as his boss said at his retirement in 1992, “Dale just couldn’t hold a job. He held 36 titles in 38 years!” Dale married Patricia Ann Rambeau in Septem- ber 1962 and their blended family of one son and two daughters added a fourth child in 1963 to round out to even numbers of boys and girls. The family moved to the Aloha, Ore., area in 1967 and stayed there until most of the kids were grown and gone. In 1977, Dale was trans- ferred to Seattle. But at re- tirement, he and Pat decid- ed to spend their last years on the Oregon coast. They built a house over- looking the ocean in Flor- ence, traveled with friends and spent time enjoying their grandkids until Patri- cia passed from cancer in 1996. In September 1998, Dale married Mary (Kitty) Tier- ney and they settled into a life of “snowbirding” — Florence in the summer and (surprise) Arizona in the winter months. Dale was an avid sports car and motorcycle fan, belonging to the Retreads Motorcycle Club in Flor- ence and the Happy Trails Motorcycle Club in Arizo- na. When not traveling, entertaining family and friends or riding the dunes, Dale liked to sit back with a cold drink and a good AMBULANCE/FIRE book. He was an honest, caring and thoughtful man who loved his family and wanted nothing more than for everyone to invest in a 401K. When Dale married Kitty, he added two step- sons and two stepdaugh- ters to the blended family, along with six addition- al grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Six great-great-grand- sons soon followed. Dale is survived by his wife Kitty; son Steven; step daughters Jodi of Tu- alatin, Kimberly of Port- land and Libby of Lowell; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandsons. He will be missed. Donations in lieu of flowers would be greatly appreciated by the Ameri- can Cancer Society. A service will be held Saturday, Feb. 29, at St. Mary’s Our Lady of the Dunes Catholic Church, beginning at 11 a.m. Burns’s Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Bozievich issues resolution on ‘Cap and Trade’ bills On Monday, Feb. 24, Lane County Commissioner Jay Bozievich issued a personal resolution opposing Sen- ate Bill 1530 and House Bill 4176, the Cap and Trade legislation, arguing that both bills violate principles adopted by the Lane Coun- ty Board of Commissioners and the Association of Ore- gon Counties, of which Lane County is a dues-paying member. “This legislation is going to harm my district and take funds away from our roads department,” Bozievich said. “I am hoping that my fellow commissioners will follow my example and adopt a per- sonal resolution because it is not possible to adopt one as a board due to our schedule.” According to Bozievich, SB 1530 and HB 4167 create a system of taxing carbon emissions that leaves the spending of those proceeds up to future legislators. In addition, Bozievich said the legislation would take funds generated from taxing transportation fuels and di- vert them from the Highway Trust Fund, allowing them to be spent on non-transporta- tion spending. Bozievich also said that the bills do not provide for any funding to local govern- ments to alleviate increased costs due to the legislation. “Both SB 1530 and HB 4167 are not transparent and include provisions to exempt financial and other infor- mation from public records requests,” said Bozievich. “In addition, they both in- clude unnecessary emergen- cy clauses that take away the serving Florence and the surrounding area “ Our Family, Serving Your Family” Burial & Cremation Service • Onsite Crematory Columnbarium Spaces • Pre-need Planning Serving Lane, Douglas and Coos County Dunes Memorial Chapel 2300 Frontage Road, Reedsport, Oregon 97467 • 541-271-2822 Karla D. Visit TheSiuslawNews.com The Presidents Scholarship Th e Rotary Club of Florence is taking applications- for our local high school seniors’ scholarships. Every year the current president chooses the guidelines for a student that is the recipient of the Presidents Scholarship. It is one among several annual scholarships and opportunities that our local Rotary Club of Florence provides, wanting to help students achieve their goals. Siuslaw Public Library Director, Meg Spenser is this year’s current president. Meg noticed that there are many high school seniors in our community that do well academically, and they are employed-full time. Th is leaves many struggling to meet the civic and extracurricular requirements that most scholarships require. While going to school and working, they have been learning good time management skills and service skills are being developed in their work environment. Th is year Meg wanted to help one of these students. Someone who works full time, contributing to their households needs by being one of the primary “bread winners”. For an application, go to www.thefl orencerotary.org and click on «Scholarships». Lists are available for various scholarships sponsored by Th e Rotary Club of Florence. Applications are due by March 31st and are awarded in May. Contributions for this scholarship come in a variety of ways. A signifi cant portion is from the Rotary auction. Also, each of the 115 local Rotary Club members are given a “coin jar” to collect donations with. Th e members make it a little competitive amongst themselves, with two groups- New Rotarian’s vs. Seasoned. To date, they have collected over 2400.00 for this scholarship. If you would be interested in contributing, Th e Rotary Club of Florence accepts donations for the upcoming auction on March 14th. Also, you may purchase a ticket for the auction dinner. Or maybe you would like to contribute by sponsoring a table (under the name of your business) for the auction dinner.
