SIUSLAW NEWS | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2020 | 3B SVC Gold team places second at 40-team tourney Over the Feb. 14-16 week- end, both Siuslaw Club Vol- leyball 14u teams were on the road in Eugene to participate in one of the biggest tourna- ments in the state: the three- day Presidents Day Tourna- ment. The tournament included 40 total 14u teams, with the SVC 14u gold team placing second overall. “We played some of the best teams in the state. Al- though we did not get the re- sults we ultimately wanted, I am still so proud of each and every one of these girls,” said coach Lona Dengler. “They played their hearts out on the court and really came togeth- er as a team.” Dengler said that Ava Cen- ter was a large part of the team’s success on the court, PHOTO BY ADAM LANE scoring 38 kills over the weekend. with 37 kills. hitters,” said Denger. “Not son but our serving has come in the tournament, with an Close behind her was mid- additional 18 aces from libe- “Our setter, Brynlee Man- only has our hitting im- so far as well.” dle blocker Rhianna Lane ues, had 118 assists for our proved throughout the sea- Center served up 25 aces ro Meika Shappell. Viks from 1B long.” The Viks struggled on the court the first half of the game, entering halftime trail- ing 25-19. “We kind of made some mental mistakes that kind of shot us in the foot, but we communicated at halftime that our defense was playing pretty well,” Perry said. The offensive turnovers got the best of the Viks, costing them 10 points in the first Fishing from 1B The best fishing has been SVC Gold Team members Olivia Baber, Brynlee Manues, Meika Shappell, Cate Wagner, Ava Center and Rhianna Lane celebrate. “Meika not only domi- nated serving, but also had a standout weekend in the back row,” Dengler said of Shappell, who had 61 digs for the team. “This team has improved so much since the begin- ning of our season, and that reflected on the court this weekend,” said Dengler. “This was such a great week- end of volleyball that I know myself, the parents — and more importantly the girls — will remember forever.” For the season, the gold team had 20 wins and 8 loss- es. And the Viks followed through, outscoring the Tigers in the third and fourth quar- ters, resulting in 35-35 tie to end the fourth quarter and force the game into overtime. “That’s a total of 12 points in the last 20 minutes of the game,” Perry pointed out. “When you do that in high school basketball, you’ll most likely win some games.” And they did, dominating overtime with 8 points com- pared to the Tiger’s 2. Standouts of the game include Braydon Thronton, who led scoring with 14 points. “He was all over the place again — dribble driving, cre- ating shots for himself and his teammates,” Perry said. “There’s not a lot of kids in the 4A that can guard him one- on-one, and Junction City plays man quite a bit. So, him being able to break down his defender and then making other guys come over and help creates shots for our team- mates.” Brody Terry added 9 points from the game, including 4 from the free throw line in overtime to clinch the win. “I thought Avery Heart had a really good game as well,” Perry said. “I told him I really needed him to step up for us to be as good as we can — and he delivered. He came in and did exactly what we needed him to do. He was great on rebounding and made layups when Braydon would drive. Avery was where he needed to be to get the ball and score layups.” The Viks went to Junction City on last night for a Sky- Em League playoff. A win would cecure a state playoff, though the power rankings could also potentially secure a spot for the No. 21 team — if No. 20 Newport falters this week. “Newport is right in front of us, and they have two tough games as well,” said Perry. “The power rankings are hard to predict on how they’re going to play out from each game to game.” The power rankings won’t be finalized until this Tuesday. For the girls, Tuesday saw the final basketball game for seniors Mia Collins, Lindsey Long, Savannah Morris, Kelsey Larson, Brittany Rodriguez and Brooklyn Cahoon as they lost to the Eagles, 41-58. Morris finished out her high school career with a 14-point game, while Collins was close behind with 10, along with 8 rebounds. around the Whitaker Creek area. The popular bank fishery on the NF Alsea is still producing fish but it has slowed down considerably over the last week.
