2A | WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS On The Record OBITUARIES HARTLEY—D elb er t Howard Hartley, born Sept. 15, 1934, passed away Dec. 31, 2019. Delbert Howard Hartley was the youngest of three boys born in Mancos, Colo., to Benjamin and Goldie Hartley in 1934. D e l lived an adven- ture-filled childhood (including Delbert having a Hartley pet mon- key, alli- gator and living in a house on stilts) in Panama while his father helped build the Panama Canal. Goldie passed away when Del was a young boy. Back in Colorado, he was primarily raised by his old- er, beloved brothers Ho- mer and Ben. Del joined the U.S. Navy, becoming a hospital corps- man attached to the U.S. Marines while in Korea and Vietnam. He made rank of Chief Petty Officer after only a few years in the Navy. He married Barbara Phillips in 1960 and had their boys Patrick (1962) and Daniel (1964). In 1972, Del retired from the Navy in Monterey, Calif. Anchorage, Alaska then became their home, where Del worked as a physician assistant for British Petro- leum on the Alaskan Pipe- line. After seven years, the warmth of Arizona called and brought with it trials and challenges. But growth and change occurred when he gave his life over to Je- sus Christ as his Savior. Del’s mind healed and his heart opened. Upon retiring in Florence, Ore., Del and Barbara camped and gold-panned all over Dunes Memorial Chapel the Pacific Northwest. After 44 years of mar- riage, his loving and faith- ful wife Barbara passed. He then became active in his church and went on med- ical mission trips to both Africa and India. Del’s next season of life began when he married his dear wife Denise, in De- cember of 2007. Del’s heart to serve the Lord while serving others continued with Denise by his side serving as an Elder in the church and visiting the sick. When he wasn’t helping others, you could find Del in the garden tending to all the plants he grew from seed, or re- arranging all the rocks he collected from the beach and elsewhere! On Dec. 31, Delbert passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord at home, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Denise Hartley; his two sons: Patrick Howard (Chris) Hartley and Dan- iel John (Lori) Hartley; five grandchildren: Holden (Daisy), Hannah, Autumn, Nathan and Nicole; and many nieces, nephews and cousins he loved dearly. Del’s Homecoming ser- vice will be held at the Church On The Rock (1750 18th St.) this Satur- day, Feb. 15, at 2 p.m. Burns’s Riverside Chap- el Florence Funeral home was in charge of arrange- ments. serving Florence and the surrounding area “ Our Family, Serving Your Family” Burial & Cremation Service • Onsite Crematory Columnbarium Spaces • Pre-need Planning Serving Lane, Douglas and Coos County Dunes Memorial Chapel 2300 Frontage Road, Reedsport, Oregon 97467 • 541-271-2822 TheSiuslawNews.com Parents: Get child immunizations before School Exclusion Day Feb. 19 Parents must provide schools and childcare fa- cilities with kids’ vaccine records Feb. 19 is School Exclu- sion Day, and the Oregon Immunization Program is reminding parents that children will not be able to attend school or childcare starting that day if their re- cords on file show missing immunizations. Under state law, all chil- dren in public and private schools, preschools, Head Start and certified child- care facilities must have up-to-date documentation on their immunizations or have an exemption. “Immunization is the best way to protect chil- dren against vaccine-pre- ventable diseases such as whooping cough and measles,” said Stacy de As- sis Matthews, school law coordinator in the Oregon Health Authority Public Health Division. “It helps keep schools and the en- tire community safe and healthy.” If a child’s school and childcare vaccination re- cords are not up to date on Feb. 19, the child will be sent home. In 2019, local health departments sent 22,547 letters to parents and guardians informing them that their children needed immunizations to stay in school or childcare. A total of 4,043 children were kept out of school or childcare until the neces- sary immunization infor- mation was turned in to the schools or childcare CORRECTION In the Feb. 5 edition of the Siuslaw News Opin- ion section’s Letters to the Editor, Letter writer Da- vid Lynch inadvertantly listed 9th District State Representative candidate Duane “Boomer” Wright as Pro-Choice; Wright is Pro-Life. facilities. This year, letters to par- ents were mailed on or be- fore Feb. 5. Parents seeking immu- nizations for their chil- dren should contact their health care provider or local health department, or call 211Info — just dial 211 or go to 211info.org. No one can be turned away from a local health department because of the inability to pay for required vaccines. Many pharmacists can immu- nize children age 7 and older; contact your neigh- borhood pharmacy for de- tails.
