Both Bailey Overton (120 lbs.) and Hayden Muller (135 lbs.) placed fourth in their respective weight classes, qualifying them for the state tournament. “Both girls won three straight matches Friday which put them in the semifinals Saturday,” Wartnik said. “Both lost to out- standing opponents in the semis but came back in the consola- tion semifinals with pins which placed them in the consolation finals.” Wartnik described Overton’s Hayden Muller match as a “dog-fight,” a tough back and forth that saw her eventually losing to an opponent from Central, 5-3. “Hayden was pitted against returning state champion Tay- lor Olson from Mountain View in her last match and suffered an elbow injury in the second round,” Wartnik said. Rather than chance worsen- ing the injury, Wartnik chose to accept a loss-by-injury de- fault. “Hayden’s injury seems to Bailey Overton Siuslaw Youth Soccer Association annual meeting set for Feb. 24 S OMETHING TO CHEER ABOUT The Siuslaw Youth Soc- cer Association (SYSA) will be holding its annual general meeting on Monday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. in the Siuslaw Middle School Commons. What they do on the mat is everything, so they know to just go out there and cheer and dance and stunt their hearts out.” Marist d Siuslaw girls: 44-36 It was a hard night at Marist Friday as both the boys and girls basketball teams lost their matches against the top- ranked Spartans. On the boys side, Marist took an early lead, leading the Viks 17-10 the in first quarter, ultimately creating a deficit that Siuslaw couldn’t over- come. By halftime, Siuslaw trailed 18 (38-20), with the Spartans building on their lead for a 52-30 advantage entering the fourth quarter — and a 64-37 win. Brody Terry led the Viks with 14 points against Marist. At press time on Tuesday, the boys team still has a chance to make the state play- offs, with everything hinging on last night’s battle on the road at Marshfield (after press deadlines). Should they come away with a win over the Pirates, they would still also have to defeat Elmira this Friday at the Falcon’s nest— then win their final home game next Tuesday against Junction City. The girls fared better in their Marist matchup, leading several times in the first quar- ter and trailing by only 4 points at halftime. The Lady Viks came out strong in the second half and scored the first basket of the third quarter to pull within a single basket of the Lady Spartans. But Marist fought back, going on a scoring run that left Siuslaw trailing 38-27 heading into the fourth quar- ter. The Spartans were able to maintain the lead for a 44-36 win. Mia Collins had a game- high 14 points, along with 6 rebounds. Lindsey Long had 8 points for Siuslaw, and Gracie Freudenthal nabbed 15 See MID COAST LAKES: Stocking of the mid-coast lakes will start up again the first week of February. Warmwater fisheries are slowing down for the year as water temperatures cool down. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has picked up on the Siuslaw as the river is finally back in shape after high water and tough conditions for the last few weeks. Expect the fishing to remain fair to good through February as more fish move into the system each day. The best fishing has been around the Whitaker Creek area. Lake Creek opened for win- ter steelhead fishing on Dec. 1. Fishing has been fair so far on Lake Creek and there are fish out there to be caught through the month of February. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing has slowed down on the Alsea River as of late. The popular bank fishery on the NF Alsea is still producing fish but it has slowed down considerably over the last week. Maybe start by power washing your home, clean the gutters, trim the bushes and lawns. Other ideas would be to paint the fascias, the front door, or the whole house if you can. Adding a few fresh fl owers, or hanging some lovely baskets adds a spark. I can give you ideas...just give me a call! Lynnette Wikstrom Broker Cell: 541.999.0786 Remember your sweetie this Friday!
