Allen Monahan, 78, of
Brooklyn, Mich., passed
away on Sunday, Feb. 2,
2020, at his home with his
family at his side.
Jim was born July 9,
1941 in Detroit, Mich., the
son of the late Frank J. and
Irene (Anderson) Monah-
an.
On Feb. 14, 1989, in Tuc-
son, Ariz., he married Peg-
gy Ann Paruch and they
shared 31
years to-
gether.

Tecumseh. Always an avid
outdoorsman, he loved to
hunt, fish and just be out in
nature whenever possible.
He also loved his fami-
ly and spending time with
them at family functions.
Besides his wife, Peg-
gy, Jim is survived by his
children: Mike (Jamie)
Monahan of Luck, Wisc.,
and Michelle (Tom) Walk-
er of Horton, Mich.; four
sisters: Kay (Mike) Larson
of Mankato, Minn., Sheri
(Jerry) Simon of Somerset,
Wisc., Patti O’Connell of
Hudson, Wisc., and Bar-
bara Silvagni of Carolina
Beach, NC; five grandchil-
dren: Jayke (Alex) Monah-
an, Brynlee Monahan and
Erik, Lorraine and Andrew
Howe; one great-grand-
daughter, Charlotte Mo-
nahan; and two golden re-
trievers, Tucker and Toby.
In accordance to Jim’s
wishes, cremation has tak-
en place and there will be
no services.

Howard Hartley, of Flor-
ence, born Sept. 15, 1934,
passed away Dec. 31, 2019.
Delbert was the youngest
of three boys born in Man-
cos, Colo.,
to father
Benjamin
and moth-
er Goldie
Hartley.

(including a pet monkey,
alligator and living in a
house on stilts) in Pana-
ma while his father helped
build the Panama Canal.
Goldie passed away
when Del was a young boy.
Back in Colorado he was
primarily raised by his old-
er, beloved brothers Ho-
mer and Ben.
Del joined the U.S. Navy,
becoming a hospital corps-
man attached the Ma-
rines while in Korea and
Vietnam. He made rank
of Chief Petty Officer af-
ter only a few years in the
Navy.
He married Barbara
Phillips in 1960 and had
their boys Patrick (1962)
and Daniel (1964). In 1972,
Del retired from the Navy
in Monterey, Calif.
Anchorage, Alaska, be-
came their home, where
Del worked as a physician’s
assistant for British Petro-
leum on the Alaskan Pipe-
line. After seven years, the
warmth of Arizona called.
It was a time of trials,
growth and change for Del,
who gave his life over to Je-
sus Christ as his Savior.
His mind healed and his
heart opened. Del and Bar-
bara retired to Florence,
Ore., where they camped
and gold-panned all over
the Pacific Northwest.
Del became very active
City seeks Planning Commission members
The City of Florence is
seeking volunteer appli-
cants for the City of Flor-
ence Planning Commis-
sion.
The Commission reviews
and makes recommenda-
tions on the Comprehen-
sive Plan, subdivision and
zoning ordinances and oth-
er planning rules and regu-
lations.
The Planning Com-
mission also serves as the
Design Review Board act-
ing to determine whether
proposed
developments
uphold the zoning and sub-
division ordinances of the
City of Florence.
The Planning Com-
mission consists of seven
members, of which five
must live inside city limits
and two may live within
the Urban Growth Bound-
ary. Planning Commission
meetings are held on the
second and fourth Tuesday
of every month at 5:30 p.m.
Persons interested in po-
sitions should expect to at-
tend all Planning Commis-
sion meetings and devote
time for study of issues pri-
or to meeting attendance.
Volunteer time is vital in
working towards solutions
to local government issues.
Those interested in serv-
ing their city and getting
involved should consider
applying for the Planning
Commission.
Deadline for applications
is Tuesday, Feb. 11.

lowing 44 years of mar-
riage. He went to Africa,
India and Israel on medical
mission trips.
Del’s next season of
life began when he mar-
ried his wife Denise, from
Florence. They traveled
overseas on mission trips
together and enjoyed local
adventures.
On Dec. 31, Del passed
peacefully into the arms
of the Lord at home, sur-
rounded by family.
Delbert is survived by
his wife, Denise Hartley;
his two sons: Patrick How-
ard (Chris) Hartley and
Daniel John (Lori) Hartley;
five grandchildren: Holden
(Daisy), Hannah, Autumn,
Nathan and Nicole; and
many nieces, nephews and
cousins he loved dearly.
A celebration of his life
will be held at the Church
On The Rock (1750 18th
St. in Florence) on Satur-
day, Feb. 15, beginning at
2 p.m.
