Both Siuslaw basketball teams began a three-game road series last night

The Viking boys’ basketball
team had little trouble caging the
Lions last Tuesday at Glenn But-
ler Court, where Siuslaw held a
double-digit lead throughout
the second half against Cottage
Grove before claiming a 50-36
victory.
The win put Siuslaw at 3-3
in the Sky-Em (9-11 overall)
heading into last night’s match-
up at Marist (after press dead-
lines) and holding on to a share
of third place — and a poten-
tial playoff spot. However, last
night’s game against the No.
1-ranked Spartans was the first
of three road matchups for the
Viks as the second half of the
season is well underway, leaving
the Feb. 18 game with Junction
City marking the last game of
the regular season — and final
scheduled home game for Siu-
slaw.
To make the post season, the
Viks will likely need to secure
wins in three of its four remain-
ing games, which also include

truth is I do not remember all
the games; it’s the games that
have special moments in them
that I remember.
When you are as sports
minded as I have been in my

MHS girls d McKenzie: 31-7
It was a historic evening for
the Mapleton girls basketball
team, which hosted McKenzie
on Thursday night in a 31-7
win that opened with a
first-quarter 7-0 Sailors lead.
It was a lead the Sailors
never relinquished.
For the first time since at
least 2015, the Sailors won
three games in a row. The
previous record was two
games, set in January 2016,
when the girls team won
back-to-back games against
Eddyville
Charter
and
Mohawk.
The Sailors latest winning
streak started with McKenzie
on Feb. 1, followed by a win
over Crow on Feb. 4, then
McKenzie again last Thursday.
In addition to the three-
game win streak, the season
also marks the first time in
more than five years that the
team has won five games in a
season; the previous record
was three wins during the
2015-16 season, which was
followed by two seasons
where the Lady Sailors didn’t
win a single game.
And there was one more
historic moment on Thursday.

Last Tuesday night, Siuslaw
took an early 9-2 lead against
the Lions in the first quarter
and extended its lead to 15-8
heading into the second period.

“Obviously, you want to be
the best you can be, one or
two, but I don’t think that’s a
possibility,” Coach Eric
Wolgamott said. “If we win
[this] Tuesday night, we lock
third in. Third is where we
want to be.”
The third-place team gets
two chances to win one game
to go to state; a third-place
team will play the sec-
ond-place team at that team’s
home court.
“And if you win that, you
play that Saturday for the
championship game for the
league,” Wolgamott explained.
“So, if you’re third, you still
have a chance to win the
whole thing.”
Last Thursday night, the
Sailors won their third game
in a row after defeating
McKenzie, holding a league
record of eight wins and four
losses. Wolgamott mapped
out the possibilities of post
league play, and third place
was looking better and better.

“The loser of the two-three
games will then play the win-
ner of the four-five game, and
that match-up will still go to
state if you win,” he contin-
ued. “If you play in the cham-
pionship game, you’re going
to state, regardless of out-
come. But if you’re in the
third-place game, you have to
win that game to go.”
From the beginning of the
season, Wolgamott has been
cautiously optimistic about
getting to this point. Now that
it’s here, he said it was exciting
to think about.
“We haven’t been in that
situation since I’ve been
coaching, and this is my third
year here,” said Wolgamott.

Stocking of the mid-coast
lakes will start up again the
first week of February. Check
the stocking schedule online
for dates and locations. Lakes
that are scheduled to be
stocked in February include:
Alder, Dune, Carter, Lost,
Elbow, Cleawox, Munsel,
Siltcoos, Thissel Pond, Big
Creek Reservoirs, Olalla
Reservoir, and Devils Lake.
Warmwater fisheries are
slowing down for the year as
water temperatures cool
down.
SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has picked up on the Siuslaw
as the river is finally back in
shape after high water and
tough conditions for the last
few weeks. Expect the fishing
to remain fair to good
through February as more fish
move into the system each
day. The best fishing has been
around the Whitaker Creek
area.
Lake Creek opened for win-
ter steelhead fishing on Dec.
1. Fishing has been fair so far
on Lake Creek and there are
fish out there to be caught
through the month of
February.
ALSEA RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has slowed down on the Alsea
River as of late. The popular
bank fishery on the NF Alsea
is still producing fish but it
has slowed down considerably
over the last week.
The mainstem Alsea is back
in shape and the fishing has
been fair for the drift boaters
on those sections. The later
