4B | WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 22, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS S PEAKERS ANNOUNCED FOR ANNUAL WINTER SERIES AT C APE P ERPETUA See what winter on the Oregon Coast has to offer and enjoy a variety of free educational presentations at Cape Perpetua. Presentations by guest speakers will be held most Saturdays from now through March 28, in addition to the hiking, tide-pooling and explor- ing always available the Cape. Winter programs will include a special focus on wildlife, restoration, and landscapes along with other unique topics. All events are free and held at the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center at 11am. Feb. 1: Exploring Oregon’s Ancient Forests — presented by Chandra LeGue, Western Oregon Field Coordinator, Oregon Wild. Dripping coastal for- ests of giant Douglas-firs, high desert groves of massive ponderosa pines, and lush mixed conifer forests surrounding jag- ged Cascade peaks — Oregon’s ancient forests are vital to our state’s future for clean water, cli- mate change, wildlife, recreation and much more. LeGue will cover a variety of topics includ- ing: What makes an ancient forest, what types exist in Oregon, where they are, who manages them, why so few still survive and what threats they continue to face. Feb. 8: Cascadia — Ready or not — Presnted by Althea Rizzo, Geological Hazards Program Coordinator, Oregon Economic and C o m m u n i t y D e v e l o p m e n t Department. The natural beauty of Oregon comes with the hazard of the Cascadia Subduction Zone earth- quake and tsunami. This talk will show you how to get started on preparing for Cascadia. Feb. 22: Corvids on the Coast—Presented by Casey Hase, Wildlife Technician, Siuslaw National Forest. An introduction to the Corvidea family, which includes crows, ravens and Steller’s jays, with an em-phasis on the unique behaviors and natural histories of corvid species common along the Oregon Coast. Learn how human activity influence corvids and their role in sensitive coastal commu- nities. Feb. 29: Saving Big Creek, Saving the Silverspot Butterfly — Presented by Andrea Scharf, Author of Saving Big Creek. Scharf will talk about the history of the Big Creek campaign to stop development of a destina- tion resort on the proper- ty and efforts to restore the Oregon silverspot butterfly population and bring it back from the brink of extinction. March 7: Girl in Water Photography — Presnted by Jamie Kish, Photographer, Artist and Marine Biologist. A lover of tidepools and local forests artist/ marine biologist, Kish, hopes to recreate the magic of the Oregon Coast in a sustainable, respectful, and empathet- ic way through her art to create emotional connec- tions to this area. March 14: Fivemile- Bell Landscape Restoration Project — Presnted by Johnny Sundstrom, N E PA Proj e c t Contractor-Coordinator, Siuslaw Institute Paul Burns, Fivemile-Bell Project Manager, Siuslaw National forest. Fivemile-Bell Landscape Restoration Project is a large-scale, multi-party endeavor to enhance the health of streams and to speed the development of old- growth forest habitats to benefit a variety of spe- cies, such as the northern spotted owl and marbled murrelet, in 5,000 acres of national forest land near Florence, Ore. March 21: Climate Change: Hoax or Apocalypse? — Presented by Andreas Schmittner, Professor of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University. This interactive pre- sentation will outline the scientific evidence for recently observed climate change, human and natu- ral causes, impacts on ecosystems and people, and possible solutions. Audience participation in discussions and ques- tions will be encouraged. March 28: Experiencing Gray Whales — Presented by Michael Noack, Retired Chief Park Ranger, Naturalist and Volunteer, Siuslaw National Forest. Noack will be present- ing Experiencing Gray Whales which, focuses on the natural history of this unique species that is fre- quently seen from the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center.
