6A | SATURDAY, JANUARY 18, 2020 | SIUSLAW NEWS World-renowned harpist Alexander Boldachev plays for Florence on stage at the Florence Events Center (FEC). Boldachev was born in Mos- cow and currently lives in Zu- rich. He performs on both the Concert Grand Harp and the Electric “Delta” Harp. It is hard to believe that he was five years old when he began playing the harp. He stated that he needed to stand on a stack of books when he first started playing the 6’3” tall instrument. He made his orchestral de- but at the of nine. He will be playing at Carnegie Hall for his 30th birthday later this month. Part of the Florence per- formance included tuning the instrument. The Grand Harp that he played for this concert was not his instrument, but one on loan from a shop in Review of SEAcoast Entertainment By Vickie Kennedy Special to the Siuslaw News “We are here to share emotions tonight,” said internationally recog- nized composer, collaborator and teacher, Alexander Bolda- chev. SEAcoast Entertainment Association outdid themselves in hosting Boldachev on Sat- urday, Jan. 11. Audience mem- bers kept commenting on how fortunate Florence is to have this quality of entertainment Chicago. Because of the hu- midity and because this harp was brand new, the instrument needed to be tuned often. Although not currently in a relationship, Boldachev com- mented that because of the many harps he has played and because of the temperamental nature of harps, he thought he could get along well with any woman. Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Prelude” was the first piece played. Afterwards, Boldachev commented that as all plan- ets began with a “big bang,” a concert should begin with a “Big Bach.” That piece was fol- lowed by the Beatles’ “Yester- day.” Continuing on a classical note, Boldachev performed Johannes Brahms’ “Intermez- Alexander Boldachev vis- ited the FEC this week. zo n.2.” There are 47 strings on the Grand Harp, and it seemed that Boldachev strummed or plucked every string. He arranged his own rendi- tion of Red Hot Chili Peppers’ song “Californication” and augmented the tune by using the sound board as percussion backup. He doesn’t seem to be limited by what is appropriate- ly classical music as he jazzed up Bach’s “Toccata and Fugue”. During the intermission, a couple commented that they had traveled down from Port- land just to attend the concert. The woman, who is just learn- ing to play the harp said she was blown away by his tech- nique and said “He is an emo- tional player who has a bond with the harp.” The second half of the con- cert started with Boldachev playing the Delta Harp, a smaller, portable, electric in- strument. He treated the audience to some folk songs, beginning with “Dorogoi Dlinnoyu” meaning “By the Long Road,” written in 1925 by Konstanin Podrevsky and Boris Fomin, and ending with “Petrushka,” a ballet and orchestral concert work by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky in 1911. To quiet things down, Bol- dachev played his version of Debussy’s “Arabesque No, 1” and then finished with “Bo- hemian Rhapsody” by Freddy Mercury. Every SEAcoast concert is a great experience. The next concert will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, featuring Bettman & Halpin’s original folk/Americana. Get tickets at the FEC by calling 541- 997-1994, at eventcenter.org and at seacoastea.org.
