The Siuslaw girls basketball
team gained its first win of the
season last Friday, taking
down East Linn Christian
Academy during the Bandon
Dunes Holiday Invitational.
“It was a really interesting
game,” Coach Ashlee Cole
said. “Both sides really came
out to play. It was also a really
low-scoring game.
“Three quarters of the way
into the first quarter, the score
was 2-2.”
The Viks had switched
things up this time around,
changing their ball handler
and getting different players
on the perimeter.

bad, screaming,” said Cole.
“Everybody was really wor-
ried about her injury. We won
the game, but it didn’t feel like
a win because everybody was
worried. I could see it in the
girls’ faces.”
Thankfully, the injury was
only a sprain and Freudenthal
will only be out for five days.
But at the time, the team
didn’t know that.
“Just having that at the end
of the game brought the mood
down because it was scary,”
Cole said. “They just need to
realize that they actually won
the game.”
Cole said she was worried
at first as well, but as it became
evident that it was only a
sprain, her mood lifted.
“I got excited,” she said.

“We got more shots, and
that seemed to work a lot bet-
ter,” Cole said, pointing out
that the Viks really worked on
shooting the ball.
But it was the defense that
really stood out for Cole.
“Our defense was really
excellent this game. We really
came to play on defense.”
Offensively, Mia Collins
and Brea Blankenship domi-
nated, with Blankenship scor-
ing some clutch 3-pointers at
the end of the game.
“That really pushed us
through,” said Cole.
Despite the Viks claiming
their first win, the mood of
the team was far from celebra-
tory at the end; with just min-
utes left in the fourth quarter,
Gracie Freudenthal rolled her
ankle.

Friday, but scoring a lopsided
111-31 win against Alsea on
Saturday.
“Friday night we didn’t play
the level I expected them to
play,” coach Dylan Perry said.
“We missed a lot of outside
shots in the first that we nor-
mally make. We need to learn
— and have talked about — is
that when we’re not making the
outside shots, we need to take
the ball to the hoop and try and
get some easy layups. We didn’t
do that as much as we should
have in the first half.”
Still, the Viks were leading by
2 at half time. It was at the top
of the third that things started
looking bad for the Viks when
they got a technical for having
too many players on the court.

junior Elijah LaCosse at 145

Meanwhile, senior heavy-
weight Matthew Horrillo
managed a pair of takedowns
for a come-from-behind win
in the consolation finals and
third-place overall.
In the girls division, sopho-
more Hayden Muller took
second in the 135-lb. bracket,
with her on-ly loss coming in
the championship bout
against Charlie Stewart of
Bend — one of the top girl
wresters in the state.
Tonight, Siuslaw hosts Gold
Beach and Sutherlin in wres-
tling duals, beginning with
Gold Beach and Siuslaw at 6
p.m., followed by a match-up
between the Vikings and
Bulldogs.
Gold Beach and Sutherlin
face-off before that at 5 p.m.
The Viks will then return to
the road, first at the Sutherlin
Invitational this Saturday,
then at Siletz next Thursday,
Jan. 16.
After that, the Vikings will
host their annual Nick Lutz
Invitational on Saturday, Jan.

MID COAST LAKES
Stocking of the mid-coast
lakes will start up again the
first week of February. Check
the stocking schedule online
for dates and locations. Lakes
that are scheduled to be
stocked in February include:
Alder, Dune, Carter, Lost,
Elbow, Cleawox, Munsel,
Siltcoos, Thissel Pond, Big
Creek Reservoirs, Olalla
Reservoir and Devils Lake.
Warmwater fisheries are
slowing down for the year as
water temperatures cool
down.
SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Winter steelhead typically
show up on the Siuslaw River
in December and peak
January through March.
Fishing has been fair so far
this year but should get better
as the season progresses into
January.
The river will be high and
off color after this week’s rain-
storms but will be dropping
back into shape next week.
There will be good opportuni-
ties for boat and bank anglers
around the popular Whitaker
Creek area.
Steelhead fishing has been
slow so far this season but
should pick up with forecast-
ed rainstorms.
SILTCOOS &
TAHKENITCH LAKES: Coho
Coho fishing closed Dec. 31
in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch
lakes but both will be stocked
with trout in February. Check
the ODFW website online for
stocking dates and locations.
TENMILE LAKES: Trout,
warmwater species, large-
mouth bass
Bass anglers will need to
slow down their presentation
as the water temperatures
continue to drop. Anglers are
catch-ing most of the bass
along the deeper weed lines
and submerged trees.
Yellow perch are cruising
on the deep-water mud flats.
Most of the fish are under
10-inches long but anglers are
catch-ing a few 12 inch-plus
fish.
Trout anglers continue to
troll for trout. A few trout
have been caught on bait by
anglers targeting yellow perch.
UMPQUA RIVER,
SOUTH: Steelhead
The mainstem South has
reopened. Fishing usually
picks up in January and there
should be a few around in the
lower sections. The river may
be in decent shape with some
rain in the forecast. Make sure
to turn in snouts from hatch-
ery fish for a chance to win a
gift card.
ALSEA RIVER: Winter
steelhead
Winter steelhead fishing
has been fair over the last few
weeks. After the recent rain-
storms anglers caught fish
throughout the system, all the
way up to the hatchery locat-
ed on the NF Alsea.
Dry conditions have slowed
fishing again this last week
but forecasted rainstorms
should get fish moving
throughout the system again
and create better conditions
for winter steelheading.
The Alsea River receives
two different stocks of hatch-
ery steelhead, one “tradition-
al” stock that is an early
returner and peaks in
December/January and a later
returning wild broodstock
that peaks January-March.
