“Everything else seemed to
go really well. We played
really well together. A few
girls could have scored a lit-
tle bit more, but I say that
every time.”
With Fruedenthal out, the
Viks ended up losing their
second game of the tourna-
ment.
“I feel like we could have
played a little bit more of our
game instead of their game,”
she said. “We were a way
better team, you could see it.
“We just need to slow
down and not play how the
other team is playing.”
The Viks stumbled in
Saturday’s game against
Bandon, who is on an eight-
game winning streak at the
moment. With Freudenthal
out, the team had a difficult
time against the Tigers,
though “our defense went
out really strong,” said Cole.
“We got into a little bit of
foul trouble at the end of the
game.”
But with Friday’s win,
coupled with Blankenship
winning the freethrow com-
petition — and Mia Collins
being named to the tourna-
ment’s All-Star roster, Cole’s
spirits are high as the Viks
reach closer to league play.
“I feel good,” Cole said.
“We’re playing as a team and

“We were getting one of
our players on the court,”
Perry explained. “They
were still letting our guy
come in, and then the other
ref wasn’t paying attention
and gave the ball to the
other team. They started
playing, and then called a
technical.”
Perry attempted to argue
the call but “he wasn’t hav-
ing any of it,” Perry said.
“He took it pretty personal
and proceeded to call, for
the rest of the quarter,
either an offensive foul or
traveling. So, we didn’t do
well that quarter.”
Perry called it one of the
most frustrating moments
of his entire coaching
career.
“But going into the
fourth quarter, we were up
by three,” said Perry. “But
we missed a couple of shots,
and they pulled out a win.”
Because of the loss, the
Viks were then pitted
against 1A school Alsea on
Saturday.
“I’m always kind of ner-
vous about those teams,”
Perry said. “You never
know what’s going to hap-
pen.”
Before the game began,
Perry let his team know
that no matter what the
score was, they needed to
play their style of basket-
ball.
“I ended up only played
our starters about nine-
I think that once we get past
our injuries and work on our
offense, we’ll have a good
showing.”
The Viks will play the
Sky-Em/Skyline Corssover
this the weekend, and then
begin league play on Friday,
Jan. 17 at Cottage Grove.
Tipoff against the Lions is
set for 7:15 p.m.
and-a-half minutes,” Perry
said. “The guys who nor-
mally didn’t get to play a
whole lot got to play a ton
of basketball, which was
great for them. It was great
for our team too, because
you never know who’s going
to have to stand up.”
The Viks shot 85 percent
from the field in that game,
leading to a lopsided half-
time score. So, they stopped
pressing, with the Viks get-
ting possessions primarily
off the glass.
Despite what Perry
called “quite a schalacking,”
he said Alsea didn’t get
frustrated.
“They were smiling and
having fun,” he said. “They
kept competing and scored
14 more points than they
had the night before. Like I
told my guys, you have to
play the game.”
Despite the slow start to
the season, the recent wins
and close losses have given
the Viks confidence as they
prepare to head into league
play.
“I think our mentality
and our spirit is the stron-
gest it’s been so far this sea-
son, which is exactly where
you want it to be at this
point,” he said.
The Viks head to
Marshfield to play the Sky-
Em/Skyline Crossover this
weekend, then will open
the league season next
Friday, Jan. 17, on the road
at Cottage Grove.
Tipoff against the Lions
is set for 5:45 p.m.
