Un- fortunately, it’s only one of the few times we hear their voices. I would love to hear, in their own words, their challenges and success as students and mem- bers of sports teams. CROW is a wonderful organi- zation and student insight into their productions would be in- teresting. Students working on science projects, civic projects, kids club, marching band and other organizations should have their say. Did any of our local students work on the watershed projects this last summer? Are students part of an art exhibit? And what is it like to be a student in a small school like Mapleton? I would look forward to read- ing those letters, perhaps in the school and youth section of the Siuslaw paper. I expect it would encourage more students to check out the paper and see what their friends have to say. —Karen Mahoney Florence Overwhelmed by community support This was my first year as Bud- dy Poppy Chairman for the VFW Local 3232. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community. The men, women and children in our town make volunteering here a blessing. Our first accomplishment was taking care of our Coast Guard families when they had pay is- sues from Washington D.C. several months ago. Our four service organizations in town raised more than $9,000 for our 38 Coast Guard families. Secondly, the community’s generosity for giving has been outstanding. We have been able to help many of our veterans in- need here locally and in Reed- sport. These are the only places our money from fundraising goes. I would also like to express my gratitude to all the volunteers who work hard and donate their time and energy to help us on behalf of their service groups.
