A Scout is a per- son who is willing and ca- pable to go the extra mile. Scouting has taught me how to become a better person — in my commu- nity, towards others and within my faith. I have learned how to do lots of paperwork, communicate with adults, and how to make and complete goals. Each merit badge I have done has taught me differ- ent skills and helped me become more confident in myself. I have found that I have several weakness- es, and some of the merit badges have helped me improve on them. My Eagle Project was to restore a hiking trail in Harbor Vista State Park. This trail goes from a campground/neighbor- hood to the North Jetty of the Siuslaw River. It was in disrepair, and unusable for people with several steps missing or too steep. In the project, we cut down branches and cut away brush, restored steps, added steps and put in gravel for ease of use and erosion con- trol. The project was very fulfill- ing and taught me how to lead a group, make goals and make plans appropri- ately. I had to prepare the steps in advance, and decide how to manage people as they arrived. These experi- ences have ben- efitted my life. I have learned not to give up, even when I think it is hard, or when I don’t nec- essarily like it. I am grate- Brayden Linton ful for the opportunity to become an Eagle Scout and all of the experiences that came with it. Brayden Linton earns his Eagle Scout Badge Brayden Linton, son of Justin and Erin Linton, joined Troop 721 in Florence upon completing the Cub Scouting program in 2014. Within the Boy Scouting program, he has served in a number of lead- ership positions, including the last one as the assistant senior patrol leader and troop scribe. He has earned a total of 21 merit badges and participated in several camp outs, as well as a weeklong summer camp out. He is currently in the eighth grade, where he most enjoys the classes that involve working with tools and electronics. He has been on the school cross coun- try, track and wrestling teams, as well as on the recreational soccer team in Florence. He is also an ac- tive member in his church youth group. Brayden will be entering high school this fall and plans on earn- ing a college degree in engineering or electronics, as well as advanced degrees in each field. Brayden’s Eagle Scout project was to restore a hiking trail in the Harbor Vista State Park where he and 34 assistants worked for a total of 116 hours cutting brush, cleaning the trails and repairing steps for the enjoyment of those hiking to the river. Lane County to roll out a new multifamily recycling program Lane County Waste Management is imple- menting a multifamily recycling program in an effort to improve access to, and quality of, recycling at apartments, condomini- ums and any multi-tenant properties that have five or more units with shared ANDREA DEXTER CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT Andrea has joined our team just in time for tax season! andrea@fl orencecpas.com (541) 997-3434 FAX (541) 997-3435 733 Highway 101 Florence, OR 97439 See Jim for your auto needs! 2150 Hwy. 101 • Florence (541) 997-3475 • 1-800-348-3475 S IUSLAW N EWS WEDNESDAY THURSDAY garbage collection. Clear instructions and signage are often the most effective tools to keep the recycling clean and sorted correctly. Lane County is offering resources and in- viting property owners or managers to register for a pilot project that will of- fer advanced resources at lanecounty.org/multifami- lyrecycling. In a National Multifam- ily Housing study on what apartment renters want, 80 percent of respondents said access to recycling is a top-five desirable feature, right up there with park- ing or a fitness center. “Lane County residents clearly feel recycling is very important, and renters should have equal access,” says Lane County Waste Reduction Specialist Sarah Grimm. “We know from research conducted by Or- egon’s Department of En- vironmental Quality that we still have high levels of improper recycling, so several free resources are available now and the pilot projects will test addition- al advanced resources.” State law (ORS 90.318) requires landlords of apartments, condomini- ums and other multifami- ly communities (with five or more units) to provide recycling service along with garbage service in certain cities and their urban growth boundar- ies. Currently, Eugene, Springfield, Creswell and Florence require property owners and managers to provide recycling. Lane County has amended code regulations to ensure this extends from city limits to the urban growth bound- ary of those cities as re- quired by law. The Lane County Waste Reduction Program is seeking interested multi- family property owners or managers to participate in pilot projects. Participat- ing properties will receive free educational resourc- es and tools to help ten- ants recycle right, and in return they will provide oversight and reporting for one year. Interested property owners or managers can register by filling out the survey at lanecounty.org/ multifamilyrecycling.
