With a minute left in the game and down by 2, the Viks were looking to secure the lead by going for a 3-pointer. When the ball went up, “it looked really good for us,” coach Dylan Perry recalled. But it didn’t go in. At that point, Siuslaw played its most disciplined final sec- onds of any game in the pre- season. Leading up to those last sec- onds was a rollercoaster although the first quarter was essentially a flat track. “We played a matchup zone that they handled pretty well,” Perry said. “They got their ball to the corner on us, which is usually the weak spot of our zone. They were hitting some shots, which kept us close in the first quarter.” Then, the Viks started mak- ing some headway in the sec- ond. “Our press caused some pressure South Umpqua wasn’t really comfortable with. So, we got out and got some easy buckets out of it.” The push put Siuslaw by 14 at the half, but Perry knew a win was in no way a sure bet. “We kept reiterating to our- selves that it wasn’t over, and we had to press on and play a better second half of See VIKINGS 3B Siuslaw falls to South Umpqua B Y N ED H ICKSON Siuslaw News S. Umpq. d Siuslaw: 48-32 The Siuslaw girls basketball team remains in the hunt for its first league victory, but moved a step closer to achiev- ing its goal last Friday night on the road at undefeated South Umpqua (7-0). Though the Lancers held a strong 15-3 lead at the end of the opening period, the Lady Vikings kept at it, tacking on 10 points in the second quarter with shoot- ing from seniors Mia Collins and Savannah Morris, and junior Brea Blankenship. The No. 13-ranked 3A Lancers took advantage of a combination of strong play by senior Kyla Pires, who sank 23 points for South Umpqua, and some poor shooting from the Viks, who went 50 percent from the foul line. The Lancers increased their lead to 35-20 at the end of the third period before securing a 48-32 nonleague victory. Collins led with a team- high 11 points, along with 6 rebound, 6 blocked shots and 1 steal. Blankenship had 9 points and Morris had 6 points for the Viks. Prior to the opener, crab vessels will set gear from Dec. 28 onwards, using the “pre-soak” period of time to set gear in anticipation of the first pull of ocean crab pots just before the new year. The ocean commercial Dungeness crab season in Oregon is targeted to open Dec. 1, but can be delayed to ensure a high-quality prod- uct to consumers and to avoid wastage of the resource. Crab meat recovery test- ing in late November and early December showed that many areas within the Tri- State region still did not meet the criteria for an opening. The delayed opening has allowed for crabs to fill with more meat and all areas have now exceeded meat recovery criteria. Recreational crab harvest- ing is currently open coast- wide in the ocean, bays and estuaries, and on beaches, docks, piers and jetties. Recreational crabbers should always call the Shellfish Hotline (800-448-2474) for closures before crabbing. Commercial Dungeness crab is Oregon’s most valu- able fishery. Last year’s delayed season opening still brought in the second high- est ex-vessel value ever ($66.7 million) with 18.7 million pounds landed, just above the 10-year average. MID COAST LAKES: Stocking of the mid-coast lakes ended in June. Check the stocking schedule online for dates and locations of stockings. Some of the bigger lakes have “holdover” trout and the fishing typically picks up in the fall when these trout are feeding to prepare for the winter months ahead. In the mid-coast, these lakes include: Cleawox, Mercer, Munsel, and Siltcoos. Warmwater fisheries are slowing down for the year as water temperatures cool down. SILTCOOS & TAHKENITCH LAKES: Coho Coho fishing has been slow in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch so far this year. The dry, clear and cold weather pattern will slow the number of fish com- ing into the lakes. Fishing should pick up with the rain. Fishing should improve and be good through December. Reminder: Retention of wild Coho is still allowed for the 2019 season, 1 wild adult Coho per day (as well as 1 jack per day) and 5 adult Coho for the year in aggregate with Siltcoos, Tahkenitch, and Tenmile Lakes. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead typically show up on the Siuslaw River in December and peak January through February. The next significant rain event will have fish on the move headed upriver to the popular Whitaker Creek fishery on the Siuslaw River. Time to get the steelhead gear out for the sea- son. Lake Creek opened for winter steelhead fishing on Dec. 1. Fall chinook retention remains closed on Lake Creek for the remainder of the sea- son. Reminder: Lake Creek (a tributary of the Siuslaw River) is closed for the fall salmon season to protect the forecast- ed low number of returning Chinook. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid-coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild coho retention for the 2019 season. ALSEA RIVER: Winter steelhead, Anglers have caught the first few winter steelhead on the Alsea River. It has been slow and the few fish being caught have been in the lower portions of the river. Expect some fish to show up with the rain. Until then, look for most of the fish to be in the lower river. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid-coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild coho retention for the 2019 season; trout fishing in streams will reopen on May 22. SALMON RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steelhead fishing is open on the Salmon River and will pick up once we get some much-needed rain. The majority of the winter steel- head on the Salmon River are wild and the run usually peaks around mid-December through February. Expect the See FISHING 2B From my home to yours, HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
