2B | SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2019 | SIUSLAW NEWS were smart. I told them you are more valuable than two points. We can make up that two points, but we can’t make up you fouling out of the game.” At final buzzer, the Sailors were up 46-37. “A win is nice, but a win under those circumstances is a little sweeter,” Wolgomott said. “I think we have the chance to be pretty successful, as long as they keep that intensity up. It won’t matter if they don’t play hard and have the same desire they did that night. Honestly, I think that’s going to be the way we win most of these games. It’s with our attitude and tenacious defense.” On Thursday, the Sailors went on to lose to Yoncalla, 52-32, as did the girls’ team, 53-10. Next week, the Siuslaw News will do a full interview Lady Sailors coach Melissa Duffy on the team’s first full week on the court and its goals for the season. Tuesday, Mapleton will be on the road at Eddyville. Girls tip off at 6 p.m., fol- lowed by the boys at 7:30 p.m. County Transfer & Recycling Th anks for recycling in Florence! Little from 1B diminishes skill develop- ment. When the more talent- ed players are no longer a part of the league, then skill building falls away. When I coached Florence Junior Baseball, I made it a practice to pair up the less-skilled players with the high- er-skilled players. When warming up, less- skilled players would have more accurate throws to catch. When they threw it back, higher-skilled athletes were more likely to catch errant throws. As a result, there were more opportu- nities to catch and throw — and the players’ confi - dence grew and their skills improved. Watching and playing with better athletes im- proved the overall quality of league teams. Organized local teams also require players, coach- es and parents to abide by a code of conduct. Th is code of conduct is in place so that players can participate in a positive atmosphere. Th e goal of winning is second- ary to trying to do the best they can. Th ere are eff orts to form equal teams, although it does not always happen. Th is winter, the Boys and Girls Club will once again off er basketball for grades 1 through 6. Th e tentative breakdown is for grades 1 and 2 to play co-ed; grades 3 and 4 with a boys and girls league; and grades 5 and 6 also with boys and girls leagues. Th ere is also a rumor of a traveling boys third-grade team being formed. If this occurs, then grades 3 and 4 may also become a co-ed league. Th e parents of these players may want to ask themselves: Is there insur- ance covering travel? Have the coaches been trained with a code of conduct in place? How much will it cost for my child to be on this team? How will being on this team help the future of Florence basketball? Is this team being formed for the benefi t of a select number of players or has there been a tryout to select the team? Youth travel teams are selected on perceived tal- ent of the future.
