Locally, Siuslaw Valley Fire Rescue, Florence Police Dept, Western Lane Ambulance, the City of Florence and U.S. Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River helped community members pick up gifts for their children ages 0 to 14. “It’s always an honor to give back to our com- munity and work alongside our partner agencies,” reported Station Siuslaw River. Lane County Toys for Tots issued a thanks to the Florence helpers, saying, “Gotta love this place and especially the people.” The nationwide effort was begun after World War II and is overseen by the United States Marine Corp Reserve. Across the U.S. this year, the number of toys given away will surpass 525 million since the inception of the program. This is the third year of the Florence distribution. Each teen gets to fill out a wish list detailing their wants, needs and educa- tional needs. Gifts will be dispersed on Dec. 19. For more info, visit home- grownpublichouse.com/ adopt-a-family. • Mapleton: Mapleton Food Share is encourag- ing area residents to bring kids to pick out presents for the entire family on Fri- day, Dec. 20, and Saturday, Dec. 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Elves will help with the shopping and there will be many gifts available. Free Experiences for Families • Hands-On Bazaar: Florence Community PTA is encouraging children and families to make their own gifts this season. On Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 11 and 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Siuslaw Elementary School. Craft supplies will be available for minimal to no cost. Some vendors will also sell homemade items at the fair. PTA will provide hot cocoa, fresh cookies and a gift-wrapping area. For more info, email florence- comumunitypta@yahoo. com. • Gingerbread Houses: Siuslaw Public Library, 1460 Ninth St., is again creating a whole village of gingerbread houses for children to frost and decorate. This event is Dec. 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is open to children and families. • Elks’ Children’s Christ- mas Party: On Dec. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. is the Flor- ence Elks Children’s Christ- mas Party. This annual par- ty features entertainment by CROW, a piñata, cookies and ice cream — plus Santa Claus and gifts for children. It is free to attend. • Victorian Christmas: Heceta Head Lighthouse B&B is hosting the Victori- an Christmas Open House on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. While this is a free event, $5 parking passes are required. People will get to take pictures with Santa and listen to local entertainers. • Free Movie: On Mon- day, Dec. 16, Florence Ki- wanis Club is hosting the Very Merry Family Movie Night at City Lights Cine- mas. There are two chances for families to watch “The Polar Express” for free: 4 and 7 p.m. People are en- couraged to pick up tick- ets early at the cinema. For more information, visit florencekiwanis.org. • Tree of Joy Holiday Party: The Florence Tree of Joy Holiday Party, host- ed by Families Connected and Oregon Family Support Network, is offering a party for special needs families on Wednesday, Dec. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Florence Elks Lodge. From 10 a.m. to noon, Santa will be at Ro- by’s Furniture & Appliance, 1870 Highway 101. Kids on the nice list will get a special treat. On both Dec. 14 and 21, Santa will take pictures with well-behaved pets from noon to 3 p.m. at the Oregon Coast Humane So- ciety Thrift Store, 1193 Bay St., for a small donation. At 1 p.m., Santa makes his way to Jawsome Kids Resale, 1901 Highway 101, for par- ents to take their own pic- tures with Santa, who will be there until 5 p.m. Ad- ditionally, Santa will be at the Florence Justice Center from 3 to 5 p.m. for kids to meet Santa and get a toy. • Christmas Concert: The Florence Community Chorus Christmas Concert takes place Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of the Siuslaw, 3996 Highway 101.
