SN Sports & Recreation THESIUSLAWNEWS.COM WEDNESDAY EDITION | DECEMBER 11, 2019 | $1.00 Vik wrestlers pin third at Harrisburg Siuslaw freshman Mason Buss provided Siuslaw with a win at 120 lbs. By Jared Anderson Siuslaw News The Siuslaw wrestling team took fourth place overall in its first meet of the season last Sat- urday, Dec. 7, with freshman Mason Buss taking first place in the 120-lb. division. “Mason was outstanding,” Viks wrestling coach Neil Wart- nik said in his recap of the Deven Dawson Memorial Tournament at Harrisburg High School. “He defeated a pair of formidable wrestlers from Central Linn en route to his championship — I mean, they were outstanding wrestlers. He fought off his back in the semi-finals before pin- ning his opponent, and he over- came a 1-point deficit by scor- ing a takedown as time expired to nab a 1-point victory in the finals. Both matches were in- tense. In both, Mason exhibited great composure, skill and men- tal toughness.” Buss earned 24 points for the Viks in team scoring, which earned Siuslaw third place overall. However, Wartnik add- ed that one could dispute that placement if they were so in- clined, noting that the score- keeper room at Harrisburg failed to include Yoskar Delam- ora’s fourth-place finish in the Vikings’ overall score. Officially, Oakland came in second with 146 points, fol- lowed by Siuslaw with 129. De- lamora’s score wouldn’t have pushed Siuslaw into second, but if there were other errors, the rankings could have changed. On the boys side, coach Dylan Perry said that the team had a decent first half, but some pivotal missed shots in the second quarter kept the Viks from taking the game. “We hit our offense relative- ly well, but we ended up with a lot of open shots outside that we needed to hit — but we didn’t knock them down,” he said. “We also went 4-14 at the free throw line, so we left 10 points on the board there.” For the first three quarters, the Viks remained within a handful of points of the Billies. In the middle of the second quarter, Siuslaw trailed by 10 points, which the Viks shrunk to an 8-point deficit in the third quarter. “But in the third quarter, we started to scramble a bit, try- ing to put more pressure on JARED ANDERSON/SIUSLAW NEWS Siuslaw junior Gracie Freudenthal lines up for a freethrow. He also played very good defense, with a couple of big blocks,” Perry said. Last game’s MVP, Braydon Thornton, was contained throughout the game by the Billies’ defense. “Braydon created shots for his teammates, but we didn’t knock the ones down that we needed to reflect on the score- board there,” said Perry. Another standout was Liam McClellan, who played his first game after being out sick for two weeks. He didn’t score, “but he came back and played well defensively.” Perry chalked the perfor- mance up to nerves, pointing out that the team is still rela- tively young. “It’s an experience thing,” he See MID COAST LAKES: Stocking of the mid-coast lakes ended in June. Check the stocking schedule online for dates and locations of stockings. Some of the bigger lakes have “hold-over” trout and the fishing typically picks up in the fall when these trout are feeding to prepare for the winter months ahead. In the mid-coast these lakes include: Olalla, Big Creek reservoirs, Cleawox, Mercer, Munsel and Siltcoos. Warmwater fisheries are slowing down for the year as water temperatures cool down. SIUSLAW RIVER: Fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing con- tinues to be fair on the Siuslaw River. The river is low and clear and there are still some fish in the estuary, but it has been slow. Fish are still holding in the upper tidewa- ter areas waiting for the next big rain event. Expect more of the same until we get some more rain. Reminder: Lake Creek (a tributary of the Siuslaw River) is closed for the fall salmon season to protect the forecast- ed low number of returning Chinook. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid- coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild Coho retention for the 2019 season. ALSEA RIVER: Fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing on the Alsea River continues to be slow with the low and clear conditions. There are still being some fish caught in the estuary as fish start to stage and wait for the next big rain event. With little rain in the 10-day forecast expect more of the same for the next few weeks. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid- coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild coho retention for the 2019 season. Trout fishing in streams closed Oct. 31. SALMON RIVER: fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing has slowed down on the Salmon River with the low and clear conditions. Most of the fish have moved up and out of the estuary headed for the spawn- ing grounds and the run is almost done for the year.
