It’s fun to know it’s not just here in Florence or Oregon. It’s nice to see that there is appeal worldwide.” Many Florence residents know Nyah through her acting roles on stage and various vocal performanc- es. One year ago, the singer invited the community to join her in filming the mu- sic video for “Empty Spaces,” her first single, at the Port of Siuslaw Boardwalk and else- where around Florence. The song debuted at a launch party at Florence Events Center. “I was so thankful that so many people showed up,” Nyah said. “I had no idea that so many people had my back until I realized there were 100 people there.” Her mother agreed. “This a matching outfit, and she’s winking at the camera. I don’t know why we don’t have that one up in a frame.” Nyah laughed. “I was a feisty 4-year-old.” People who want to hear Nyah perform have several options in December. The first is Friday, Dec. 13, at Mindpower Gallery’s hol- iday reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at 417 Fir Ave. in Reed- sport. She follows this on Dec. 14 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Victorian Christmas Open House at Heceta Lightkeep- er’s House. She will perform with guitarist Marco Peña. In addition, Nyah is the featured artist on several lo- cal radio stations. On Dec. 4, people can listen to her in- terview on KXCR 90.7 FM at 4 p.m., or stream the channel on kxcr.net. In Part II, hear about Nyah’s songwriting process, what influences her and what comes next. The first step to better hearing? During that period, re- sponders did a quick look through the house to ensure that nobody was trapped in the house. Directly after the blaze was put out, they did a more thorough search. “The fire department is concerned about pets,” Mill- er said. “We keep that as a priority because we know they’re part of the family. As the fire was knocked out, searching for the pets was our primary goal.” Equipment to revive the pets were set up as firefight- Oregon Coast Humane Society Christmas Store Open all Season 11/01-12/24 Mon-Sat 10am-4pm Sun. 12pm-4pm 1193 Bay Street, Old Town Florence 541-997-5705. The American Red Cross arrived to provide assistance to the family, who were able to find shelter that night with family members. While the fire was put out quickly, crews remained un- til 3 a.m. to search for any possible hot spots. “Even though we could knock the fire out in four minutes, we start pulling things apart, ripping the ceiling down and tearing into it, making sure there was no fire anywhere else,” Miller said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, as is whether or not the home can be salvaged, Miller re- ported.
