Several elk seasons east of the Cascades will shift from general season to controlled hunts in 2020 to improve bull ratios and hunt quality. This means hunters will need to apply Fishing See Jim for your auto sales needs! from 1B from 1B mid-coast these lakes include: Olalla, Big Creek reservoirs, Cleawox, Mercer, Munsel and Siltcoos. Warmwater fisheries are slowing down for the year as water temperatures cool down. SIUSLAW RIVER: Fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing continues to be fair on the Siuslaw River. The river is low and clear and there are still some fish in the estuary, but it has been slow. Fish are still holding in the upper tidewater areas waiting for the next big rain event. Expect more of the same until we get some more rain. Sky-Em League. Th is was much like the position held by the Vikings in the Far West League in the 1980s. Not every sport won titles yet every time an opponent faced a Viking team, they knew they would need their best eff ort for a win. In cross country season last fall, there were two “top dogs in Siuslaw and Marist. Each knew from day one of the season it would be one or the other claiming the Sky-Em title. If a favorite existed, it would have been the Marist girls. Th e Viking teams — boys and girls — were more determined than ever as they each won by a single point for Sky- Em titles. Anyone wishing to contribute topics for my column just email them to the Siuslaw news. We will be the under- dogs for most of the win- ter season. As one of the smallest teams in the Sky- Em, it is important for our community to come to these competitions and en- courage our athletes. Mark your calendars and see if we can be the largest crowds this up- coming basketball season, which starts with a home game on Dec. 4. to hunt Rocky Mtn elk season in the Hood- White River-Maupin- Biggs-Columbia Basin units and in units on the eastern flank of the Cascades (formerly in Cascade elk general sea- son). Western Oregon gen- eral season buck deer hunters will be able to take a spike in the 2020 season as the new bag limit is “any buck with visible antler.” There are sufficient bucks in the population to support increased harvest and the change may also help the buck deer population, as hunters will be able to remove deer in poorer condition and the bucks that are genetically inclined to remain spikes. Finally, due to a print- ing error, the Maupin unit is colored as black and appears to be closed to hunting during general deer archery season in the printed hunting regu- lations. The unit is not closed and the online version is correct. For more information on the changes to 2020 big game hunting regula- tions, visit www.myodfw. com/articles/whats-new- 2020-changes-big-game -regulations. Reminder: Lake Creek (a tributary of the Siuslaw River) is closed for the fall salmon season to protect the forecasted low number of returning Chinook. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid-coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild Coho retention for the 2019 season. ALSEA RIVER: Fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing on the Alsea River continues to be slow with the low and clear conditions. There are still being some fish caught in the estuary as fish start to stage and wait for the next big rain event. With little rain in the 10-day forecast expect more of the same for the next few weeks. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the mid-coast aggregate (Siletz River to Siuslaw River). No wild coho retention for the 2019 season. Trout fishing in streams closed Oct. 31. SALMON RIVER: fall Chinook Fall Chinook fishing has slowed down on the Salmon River with the low and clear conditions. Most of the fish have moved up and out of the estuary headed for the spawning grounds and the run is almost done for the year. A few fish are still being caught in the estuary and the pressure has been light. Due to low forecasted fall Chinook returns, this year’s daily bag limit has been reduced to 1 wild Chinook per day and 5 per year for the north coast aggregate (Necanicum River to Salmon River). No wild Coho retention for the 2019 season. SILETZ RIVER: Fall Chinook, summer steel- head Fall Chinook fishing on the Siletz River continues to be slow with the low, clear, and cold conditions. Fish will start to stage in the estuary again waiting for the next big rain event.
