State Fire Marshal urges fire safety to be part of holiday menu Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and State Fire Marshal Jim Walker wants to remind Oregonians to add fire safe- ty to their cooking and hol- iday meal plans. “The holiday is a time to give thanks and enjoy friends and family,” said Walker. “By following ba- sic fire-prevention tips, you can keep yourself and loved ones safe and avoid cook- ing-related fires.” In Oregon, cooking was the leading known cause of residential structure fires over the past five years (2013-17) All told, there were 10 deaths in Oregon from resi- dential cooking fires during the past five years, or an average of two deaths per year. Cooking safety tips: • Don’t leave cooking food on your stovetop un- attended, especially when frying and sautéing with oil. • While your turkey is cooking, check on it fre- quently. • Use a timer to monitor cooking times when sim- mering, baking, or roast- ing foods that require long cooking times. Check the stove or oven frequently. • Remember to keep items that may catch fire, like oven mitts, wooden utensils, food wrappers, and towels, at least three feet from the cooking area. • Roll up your shirt sleeves and avoid using clothing that may come in contact with open flames or other heat sources. • Don’t cook if you are drinking alcohol or using other substances that make you drowsy. • Keep children three feet or more away from all cooking areas, hot food, and liquids to avoid burns. • Keep pot and pan han- dles turned inward on the stove to avoid bumping them and spilling hot foods. • Heat cooking oil slowly and never leave it unattend- ed. Make sure you have smoke alarms on every lev- el of your home, outside each sleeping area, and in every bedroom. ReVision Florence project update for November The ReVision Florence Streetscape Project is still under construction. The estimated substan- tial completion date for the project has been extended to Jan. 31. Moving into the holiday season, expect to see lighter crews the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christ- mas and New Year’s Day. During these holiday breaks, traffic control will remain in place as needed and the area will still be considered an active con- struction zone. Continue to be cautious in the area as it will remain an active construction zone through the completion of the project. Highway 101 Paving Up- date Alex Hodge Construc- tion (AHC) and their sub- contractors have paved the majority of the travel lanes for U.S. 101 between the Siuslaw River Bridge and the OR126/U.S. 101 junc- tion. AHC will be paving the outer parking and bike lanes on the eastside of U.S. 101 over the next month as new curb and gutters are completed. They will also be com- pleting the paving around driveway aprons and where U.S. 101 intersects local side streets. The U.S. 101/ OR126 junction will be re- paved separately as it will require additional traffic control in order to com- plete. Notice of paving op- erations will be provided when the specific dates and times are scheduled. Recently Asked Questions • Debris Pile: During the construction project, AHC has had an agreement with the Florence Urban Renew- al Agency and the City of Florence to use the Quince Street property (Across from the FEC) for its job site and staging. Over the next few months, AHC will be removing the debris pile from the Quince Street staging site. • Landscaping: The land- scapers are finishing the construction of the irriga- tion system and will be- gin the plantings after the Thanksgiving holiday. This will include the abatement of the weeds that have grown in these areas. • Driveways & Side Streets: As paving is com- pleted, the contractor will be completing the con- nection work of newly constructed and existing driveways. The local street approaches will also be paved to create a smooth transition between the side streets and the highway. • Gateway Monuments: The Florence Urban Re- newal Agency (FURA) will be going out to bid for the construction of the gate- way monuments at Maple and Quince streets in early 2020. The FURA Board an- ticipates considering con- tract award at the February 2020 Board meeting.
