The performance will be- gin at 1 p.m. on Wednes- day, Nov. 13, 2019, at the Florence branch, 1460 Ninth St. This program is for all music lovers, and is made possible through the sup- port of SEAcoast Enter- tainment Association. The Texas Gypsies have been together since 2004. The group of well-seasoned players, comprised of Grammy winners and mu- sicians who have backed up many of today’s premiere jazz, swing music and pop performers, started out in- formally jamming in a ga- rage. This is where they de- veloped their unique blend of swing. Since formally forming the band, the Texas Gypsies have earned awards, been featured in magazines, per- formed over 1,000 shows and released four CDs. The Texas Gypsies’ mu- sic is described as “cool hep cat sounds” of the roaring 1920s’ “Great Gatsby” era. They mix in big band swing sound, then add western swing, sprinkle some Djan- go style Gypsy Jazz (also known as Parisian Swing) over the top, and finish up with a pinch of retro deco rockabilly. This exception- al blend of sound is sure to get toes tapping. Florence Fall Community Clean Up considered a success Last Saturday, Nov. 2, over 60 people took advan- tage of the Fall Commu- nity Clean Up at the Siu- slaw High School parking lot. Since 2012, the City of Florence Environmen- tal Management Adviso- ry Committee (EMAC) has annually hosted a free collection event which fo- cused on tires, propane tanks and appliances. This year, community members could also bring furniture, building materi- al supplies, electronics and block Styrofoam, which kept all of these items out of the landfill. There were more than a dozen volun- teers who helped everyone properly dispose of their stuff — with most of it get- ting reused or recycled. This free community clean-up event opportuni- ty was made possible via an annual Transfer Station fee waiver from Lane County Waste Management. The following local partners donated gener- ously with volunteers and/ or resources to make this event fun and successful: Siuslaw School District, Habitat for Humanity, St. Vinnie’s, Les Schwab Tires, Big Dog Donuts and Deli, Ocean Grinds Coffee, Central Coast Disposal, County Transfer and Recy- cling, Master Recyclers of Florence, City of Florence staff and EMAC mem- bers, as well as local media outlets who helped spread the word in the communi- ty. “It was a wonderful city- wide effort that will be held again in the future,” said EMAC Vice Chair Britte Kirsch. “From all of the EMAC members, thank you Florence for making this a success and keeping our community clean!” For more information on recycling or reducing your waste, contact the City of Florence Planning Depart- ment at 541-997-8237 or by email at planningdepart ment@ci.florence.or.us. EMAC meets monthly at Florence City Hall, 250 Highway 101, on the third Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Friends hold Pop-Up Book Sale today S IUSLAW N EWS hard back and trade paperbacks will be $2.
